Feb-12-02, 10:50 PM (EST) "New Superliner model" This is my first attempt at a 3D object. The shape is based on various angled photographs of actual Superliners, with exact measurements guesstimated. (Roughly 80ft x 12ft x 18ft) I've been doing the tutorials at Train Artisan but only the beginner series is done, so if anyone is interested (independant or not) maybe we can collaborate on this project. I haven't yet learned the art of texture mapping and I've no clue how to put bogies on this sucker so if you'd be interested, let me know.
Since the F40's came out the default Superliners have been gnawing at me. When I run 'em directly behind the loco, they're SHORTER! Anyway, let me know.Blake Harris

Height: 16'
Width: 10'
Truck center to Truck Center: 59' 3"Shape looks pretty good so far! The roof needs to be rounded a bit more where it meets the sides of the body a bit "flatter" (Less rounded at the top).Hope this helps! Good luck, and i'm looking forward to seeing the completed model!------ BUZZ ------

Feb-13-02, 00:36 AM (EST) 3. "RE: New Superliner model" I seriously doubt I'll be able to finish this thing on my own. As of now I can't figure out how to get back in to put the correct dimensions. Plus I've been trying to do trucks, and that is just turning out to be a disaster. *Shrug* I'll keep working but I seem to be stuck for now.Blake Harris

Blake! If you will go using something as user unfriendly as Max to make your models then good luck to you! The learning curve for MAX to be used for trainsim is so damned steep and the interface to be blunt stinks! If you really want to build models for train sim then get your backside moved over to 3D Canvas! or at worst TSM. As you're a beginner to 3D modelling you have not a cat in hells chance of getting yourself up to speed with MAX in less than 12 months minimum and even then you'll be struggling. Max is very deff not a prog for 3D beginners! It has too many confusing features that in any case you'll never use for trainsim models, and it's a general pig to use even when you know it well. If you really want to build stuff for train sim then move to something useable.Trust me on this! I use MAX and Canvas and I know which one is better for trainsim and it ain't MAX!Best Regards,

Feb-15-02, 04:40 AM (EST) 6. "RE: New Superliner model" LAST EDITED ON Feb-15-02 AT 04:40 AM (EST)I'll second the 3D Canvas suggestion!
I remember browsing through those tutorials thinking "I ain't gotta do THAT in 3DC", "3DC does THAT step automatically", and "Wow, that's so much easier to do in 3DC!". Please note, i am in NO WAY bashing TA's tutorials, i think they are excellent! I am just saying i think 3DC is much easier to use. Actually, once you know the program, you can easily adapt the tutorials for 3DC.For example, in 3D Canvas, i can re-scale an object by selecting it, clicking the "scale" tool, and dragging the mouse to re-size the whole thing. Pivot points have never been an issue either - on my first model, the wheels rotated WAY wrong, but all i had to do was open the shift tool, put in 90 for one of the axis rotations, then click the part and drag it back to where i wanted it. That was it!! No resetting x-whatevers or any of that other stuff in MAX!3D Canvas LP will run you $34.95 US, and that includes the MSTS Wizard. If you decide to go that route and have any questions, post 'em here on the forum and one of the 3DC experts will answer your question (i myself will try to answer, but i do not consider myself an "expert", just knowledgeable!).------ BUZZ ------
