Feb-08-02, 07:46 PM (EST) "Shading problems solved....at last." With a lot of help from Richard at Amabilis (3D Canvas), and a good day's worth of chasing my own tail, I've come up with a hideously complicated solution to the shading problem I moan about all the time. If I ever perfect it and get it out of my head, I'll post the 30-something step procedure on one of the forums. For the time being though, feast your eyes on this image (oude probleem = dutch for "old problem")Message Areas - "Shading problems solved....at last." – image 1Needless to say, this solution will find its way into all my superscale updates from now on.....Message Areas - "Shading problems solved....at last." – image 2

doesn't that look good!
30 step fix?.... sounds to me, one of our programmers might be able to make an .exe that does it it one??
I think we just saw "a one giant step" situation evolve here!
Cheers

LAST EDITED ON Feb-09-02 AT 01:28 AM (EST)If you are running 3DC natively it is probably a one step process (use the Crease operation).Chris is talking about the process of exporting from MAX and importing to 3DC and all the post-import steps required. Hopefully it won't REALLY be a 30 step process. Richard Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-09-02, 01:33 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Shading problems solved....at last." I'm not going to pop open the wriggling can of worms just yet because I've only done it on one train so far. Richard has offered to look over the procedure I'm using so we'll discuss it in private and "perfect it" before I release it on the world.
Rest assured though that I'm not one of those "I've got a secret" people - hopefully all my initial findings on pantograph and wheel animations should dispel that thought. So if you're patient, and I can iron the bugs out of the process, all will be revealed in the next couple of weeks. Just watch this space. Or a new topic on the forum if I forget where this one is

Feb-10-02, 03:36 AM (EST) 9. "RE: Shading problems solved....at last." I had a quick look at the procedure for converting MAX to 3DC and it looks good. I am betting that with a little bit of thought and a couple hours work (by me) on a new plug-in or script it should be a relatively easy process. And, if you use 3DC natively this is a no-brainer to fix. The Crease operation is the answer.Richard Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Far better than TSM and less complex to use than MAXI finally understand where the smoothing groups that are in Max live in 3DC... and more to the point how they work now!I do use both MAX4 and 3DC.... I have to say that to be very honest, while there are a few things I'd like to see in 3DC, it's still far easeir to wrap your head round than the overloaded, too many featured, badly documented, miserably user unfriendly, monster that is Max4!! and a great price too.On top of that the Trainsim Export wizard is brilliant! Far better than that garbage in TSM.Best Regards,

LAST EDITED ON Feb-09-02 AT 06:30 AM (EST)Hi Chris,Oh that problem , l cannot speak for Gmax or 3DC but can for TSM, the solution in TSM is one simple step, l carried it over from my planes l make and it works a treat , everybody will be able to see it this weekend when l load up the DB V160s to this site. The samples !.Message Areas - "Shading problems solved....at last." – image 5 Message Areas - "Shading problems solved....at last." – image 6Best regardsMichael Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-09-02, 09:19 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Shading problems solved....at last." Hmmm, I'm intrigued by your ideas and wish to subscribe to the newsletter. I managed to get rid of most of the problem with the latest HST model, but it wasn’t an ideal solution so I’m really hoping there is a simpler way to do it than the way I did it.James.Message Areas - "Shading problems solved....at last." – image 7 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
