Feb-07-02, 10:05 AM (EST) "One more from the oddball files - any takers?" UP steam-electric (think steam turbine instead of diesel to power the generators) I love the deco look on these early units..

They only operated as experimnents on the UP, NYC, and NP before being scapped in 1942. Source - 2nd Diesel Spotters GuideKevin Arceneaux Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

LAST EDITED ON Feb-08-02 AT 01:39 PM (EST)> BTW - you take your sig from DS9, or the original Cicero??*LOL* I'm from Germany, I didn't even know how the original title of the episode in question was until a few weeks ago! But when I found out, I looked into the background of where and when Cicero made this comment. It translates as "In wartime the law is made silent" (sorry if it sounds jaggy, needed to translate the German translation into English) ...and when I thought about it and considered what is going on in the world these days I found it quite fitting...both as an observation and as a warning what we should not let happen.Cheers from the Old World,D.M.(Added) Cicero's saying literally translates as "Under arms the laws are silent" .

Feb-08-02, 01:58 PM (EST) 7. "RE: One more from the oddball files - any takers?" Greetings back.. I recognized it from my classical studies days and too many years of Latin (way back when<>G).. Only found out about the DS9 connection a while back when someone pointed it out.. They wondered what it meant and where it came from..
cheers from the colonies...

Feb-08-02, 02:35 PM (EST) 8. "RE: One more from the oddball files - any takers?" Yeah, I had four years of Latin in school, but could not carry it through to my graduation because I could not fit it into my schedule . It was a pity, I really liked the language and the philosophy. Maybe I'll take a refresher course at college some time, but I'm not sure if and when.Speaking about oddballs, how about the German experimental diesel-pneumatic locomotive V 32? I haven't been able to find any photos of one so far, but...well, it looked much like a boxcab diesel and had (obviously ) a diesel engine driving a compressor. The chassis was simply one from a 4-6-4 steamer, but the pistons were driven by compressed air instead of steam. Quite an interesting sight.D.M.
PS: Did you see "Tribbles and Tribble-ations"? Hilarious!!!"Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges" Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
