Jan-31-02, 01:32 AM (EST) "Here's a thought for a new locomotive" I used to live by ex-SP's Donner Pass line and I used to enjoy watching freight trains pulled by the tunnel motor diesels. For those who don't know the tunnel motor was created by EMD for SP (DRGW later bought some) due to problems with the locomotives over heating in the numerous tunnels on the mountain pass. EMD solved this problem by moving the radiator intakes lower so that they would draw in cooler air. Only two different models were made the SD45T-2, and the SD40T-2. Rarely do the few remaining tunnel motors go over the pass, that job has been taken over by the newer diesels. However according to people I know that have worked the pass the new diesels can have overheating problems in the tunnels and snowsheds. I had the idea a while back for something that I call the SD70MT. It is essentially an SD70M but with the rear end of a tunnel motor. Most of my TSM time is spent with steam generation projects and I don't have the time to tinker with something that doesn't fit my operating preferences but I thought I would toss this one out to see in case somebody would like to try it (who knows jltrains might try to plaigerize it).The voice of insanity in a seemingly normal world.
