I like all the little steamers like the 2-4-2 by Jon Davis, his Kelly Booth... I guess I couldn't pick a favorite to tell ya the truth. But certainly TA's excursion into this, and there ESE is a fantastic addition to our collection of steam engines! But have you all heard of Nickel Plate's Berkshire?? *hint hint* Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-25-02, 01:33 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Like a Beauty........" I agree! As much as I love those diesels (especially the F7A), there is really nothing quite like the "steam experience". The Mountain is one of my favorites too. Thanks to those talented dudes at TA for a great ride!Message Areas - "Like a Beauty........" – image 1 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

The NKP Berkshire's are one of my favorite locomotives. I've got a couple of other projects in the works at the moment but I'd expect a Berkshire to appear some day.Conn Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-25-02, 01:41 PM (EST) 4. "How about the Big Boy?" Train Artisans mountain is great. I still love the sleek lines of the Eastern State Express though. That train is a beauty even standing still. The one train I would really love to see though is the Big Boy, especially one in PRR livery. I don't know if PRR ever did actually use them, but it would be cool to have a PRR Big Boy even if it was fictional. Sadly though I don't think anyone is currently working on a Big Boy though and I don't have the skills to do it myself. Hopefully one will be made in the future though. I will keep hoping for it until then. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

There are far neater steamers we could have for MSTS.. check out these..(Ok.. most of these are PRR, but they are still cool steamers..)
First off, one of my all time favourites..

(France and Italy and Germany also had some cool steamers.. Some of Chapelons designs and mods for the French Railway were pretty impressive)cheers

Jan-25-02, 06:25 PM (EST) 6. "RE: A Big Boy may be nice, but IMHO...." Gotta disagree with ya a little on this one, Harold. I think Big Boy would be the ultimate MSTS steamer. These were machines of incredible power. These fire-breathing dragons had a 24 foot fire box that chowed down 1 TON of coal in a single mile. They had to be coaled and watered every 25 miles! Someone asked if PRR had Big Boys. Nope, they were built exclusively for Union Pacific, and no one else ever operated one. Big Boy's little brother 4-6-6-4 Challenger was operated by UP and Denver & Rio Grande Western for certain, and possibly by other western roads, but I'm not sure which ones. Besides, most of the steamers already out there have an east-coast flavor to them. Big Boy is closely associated with the mountains and open spaces of the West, and we really need some true western steamers! (and heck, it is one of my favorite locos!)Grizzly Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-25-02, 11:35 PM (EST) 7. "RE: A Big Boy may be nice, but IMHO...." You can add the Clinchfield to the list of railroads that used the 4-6-6-4 challengers. Units 670-675 were aquired from the Defense plant corporation in 1947. They were built in 1943 and had been leased by the DRG&W up until they were bought by the Clinchfield. Alas, they were all retired by August of '53.-Chris Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-26-02, 11:39 AM (EST) 8. "RE: A Big Boy may be nice, but IMHO...." Well.. We have on "true" western steamer.. John's Selkirk..
They were western mountain haulers for sure..
hut, I'll agree, Big Boys were impressive. Trains Mag did a special on Aloc a while back, and there was a fold out of a Bog Boy, with a really good article, to boot..cheers
Harold
