Jan-18-02, 02:51 PM (EST) "Using GP38 Cabview with Dash-9 Sounds" What do I have to do if I wanted to use the gp38 cabview with dash-9 sounds?(for U25B). Would I have to edit .eng files or switch files or anything? Its a experiment, but I would like your input before I try it. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Using GP38 Cabview with Dash-9 Sounds" Hi Joke:You need to read about aliasing files - you're serious about this stuff, I know (been reading your posts) so you're probably going to have enough engines to do this the right way.One simple fix would be to copy the Dash9 horns (there are two - Dash9 and x_Dash9 for inside and external sounds) into your GP38 sound folder, remove the default GP38 .wavs for horn, and rename these Dash9 files you just copied, to be GP38 ( I think it's gp38horn1.wav and x_gp38horn1.wav). The computer will play them, thinking they're the GP38 horns - wolf in sheeps clothing so to speak. Don't overwrite the original GP38 horn files - you may need them for something else - I use mine for SW1200 and SW1500's. Just move them into a default storage file somewhere, so you can return to them later when you alias all your sounds and cabviews. The engine file calls upon two sound files to make noise - they are files ending in "sms" and are specified in two or three lines inside the engine file. For the GP38 they should be GP38cab.sms and GP38eng.sms, if I recall. One covers sounds heard inside the cab - the other controls sound heard near or outside the engine. The sms files are usually located in the sound folder for an engine. The sms files refer to and call up the wav files, usually located in the same folder. You can change an sms file to call up a horn sound from anywhere, though.I use different horns all the time, but I've aliased my sound and cabview folders. When I want an engine to use everything in a sound folder except a horn from a different sound folder, I change the sms files, replacing the reference to the original horn, and directing the computer to play a different horn. You do this by telling it what .wav file to play, and where to find it.Try looking at this link: http://www.train-sim.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=2295&forum=DCForumID5&archive=What you want to do is pretty easy. By the way, if you just don't like the default GP38 horn and want to try a really neat GP38 horn, and keep the Dash9 sound different, there is an alternative GP38 horn in the sound files in the download section. I beleive the name is npgp9snd - and it comes with complete, very easy instructions. Sounds great, and it's easier to do the short blast on the horn.Good luck!! I hope I haven't told you way more than you wanted to know...lol. And if anyone reading this finds an error, please let us BOTH know!Mark
