Jan-13-02, 12:02 PM (EST) "A couple of quick TSM questions:" LAST EDITED ON Jan-13-02 AT 12:04 PM (EST)1) Are there any prebuilt features in TSM - eg. bogies etc. as they look quite hard to build.2) How easy is it to apply textures, with the old FS aircraft design pack, I could never figure out how to apply textures - and can you see them on the model in TSM itself?3) Is there a printed manual with the boxed version, because I prefer programmes where there is a full manual provided - don't like the help files etc. Thanks for any help.Euston

No complex parts you, but there's been some discussion here which you've probably seen about creating parts libraries. I'm hoping that this happens. If people upload the dst files along with there projects they could be dissected for parts.2. I'm still learning texturing, and there are some monir quirks, but that may be because I'm still learning how it works. One undocumented feature is that you can tile a texture on the x or z axis but only if you want the entire texture file tiles. If you have, for example, a wall and a roof in the same texture file it tiles the whole thing. The solution is to put each texture in its own file. An undocumented bug is that there are problems with texture files smaller than 256x256.BMP textures display in the 3-D window view, but TGA textures don't.3. You get a printed manual with the boxed version. On the other hand you can get a PDF version along with the downloaded version and print it yourself. that's what I did. It's cheaper, but you need to decide if you want to do that. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-13-02, 01:07 PM (EST) 2. "RE: A couple of quick TSM questions:" "BMP textures display in the 3-D window view, but TGA textures don't."Wrong. TGA-textures show in the perspective view (3D-view) just like BMP-textures do. I use TGA-textures all the time. The only thing that the perspective view doesn't show properly is transparency.
This car uses a TGA-texture. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-13-02, 03:29 PM (EST) 4. "RE: A couple of quick TSM questions:" Svante,How do you get the TGA textures to display? When I apply a TGA texture to a polygon in TSM all I get in the 3-D window is a blank grey display for that poly. Finally started applying display colors to my surfaces so I could distinguish the default display color from something I'd textured with a TGA image.Nick Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

>Bogies and parts are not as hard to build as they look, often times, it makes sense to build up complex forms with the use of transparent textures. The way TSM is set up, you only need to build a part once and save it. So for example, if you built a coupler, you can use this same part on different models.>2) How easy is it to

>You can use both TGAs and BMPs. These can both be used on the same model. As for applying the texture, its not that hard once you've got the hang of it. The program is quite powerful and weak in this area. I say it's weak as you'll end up having to do a lot of maths if you need to do a lot of fine detailing.Incidently, one of the really nice things about the program is that it makes it very easy to specific properties for parts. I like this a lot as it gives you very fine control over what you are doing>

>I have the d/l'd version, so can't answer this question. The help files are, unlike the Kuju tech docs, comprehensible and accurate, but a little vague in some areas. My recommendation - get it - its a BREEZE to learn and use, and it'll open up a completely new aspect of the hobby to you. If you are a person who likes making things, this program is a must have. It is a great beginner's tool, and most advanced users will like it too. Mind you, this is NOT the program to attempt a steamer in as there are some apparently bugs with the animation features.Hope this helps.TrackDancer Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: A couple of quick TSM questions:" LAST EDITED ON Jan-14-02 AT 02:21 PM (EST)Thanks, sounds okay - I'll look out for it when I'm next at a computer shop (how large is the download??).With Aircraft Factory the main problem I had was getting the plane's bounding box right, and to get it to sit on, not above or below the runway - is there an easy way to do this in TSM - and are there any tutorials?Oh - and you say there are animation problems - does this mean no animation possible, or is it just for steamers?

Jan-14-02, 06:29 PM (EST) 9. "RE: A couple of quick TSM questions:" Several people have tried to animate the rods on steamers in TSM and have run into problems. The bell on one of models is animated, but the movement is a little jerky. Matt P. (who wrote some of the tutorials) at uktrainsim.com mentioned that there was some issue with the animation feature and that he was in touch with the developers on the issue, but gave no specifics.I have been able to animate wipers without problems, but once again, the movement is jerky. Not sure whether the problem is user related (me) or a bug in the program.TrackDancer Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
