Jan-12-02, 03:59 PM (EST) "Standards, committees and Big Dave" It was recently posted that a committee to direct the direction of development of new engines be formed. The result was a lot of dissention. This brought to mind the whole Linux movement which is a loose community of individuals who work on what interests them and share it with everyone to the greater benefit of all. I think this MSTS community shares many of the same strengths. One area that could be changed is a few loose standards that would help everyone enjoy the hobby more. For instance, loose file naming conventions so we can tell if a file is a car, engine, etc. and what railway it is. Some use the engine type, others use the railway name plus the railway's assigned number, etc. Also is the matter of installs. Some zips install directly into a folder under trainset, others include the entire path from the root drive all the way through subfolders. These are very minor issues that lend themselves to discussion of loose standards. There's no question of anyone directing or imposing their will on anyone. It's more a matter of if we discuss a few of these technical issues would we agree on a handful of best practices that could be made available to people as a package much like many people reuse README files and change the info in them. Those re-used READMEs are actually very helpful. My 2 cents. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-13-02, 01:08 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Standards, committees and Big Dave" I agree with you and would welcome the naming convention idea,
however the problem might exist in that some of the folks posting (like me) don't have their own site to host the files and need to use Nels site....the software that allows the post is restricted to the 8 character naming convertion and it makes for a difficult time to put in the info about unit type, road name and model number/release (beta, etc)...so this may never come to fruition unless the software changes or the downloads are hosted somewhere else.LaterControll Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
