Jan-12-02, 02:10 AM (EST) "Hold on......." Before we continue with new equipment, should we not patch up the default stock, make them more... proportional and insert bits that were removed. For example, make FS's tender normal sized (reduce it by a factor of 10%) and insert the crosshead guides on the cylinders. And so on.Cheers and

Jan-12-02, 08:35 AM (EST) 1. "evolution of the idea" Hi to all,
I agree completely to your idea, and if possible I'm going forward saying that it could be preferable to have the equipment, apart from some masterpiece of the history, developed only for the route that are available, and then if possible inserted in activities that make use of it completely, and make the run much more interesting.
Now as now we are plenty of many nice models that, although downloaded probably will never be used in an activity, making them almost useless.
I propose a joint comitee of the best simmers on this forum to evaluate which will be the next "theme" , and after many proposals which will be voted by most of us, they could proceed with a new fascinating project, involving the route itself, better if an extension of the many existing, rolling stock, locos and particular buildings. At the end of the process the route , the rolling stock, the locos and the activities will be packed in self extracting files making their use simpler and faster than now.
I don't know if it's a drem or if it will be real in the future, but I know that I want to know what all of you thik of this.
TKS
Ciao

Jan-12-02, 08:57 AM (EST) 2. "RE: evolution of the idea" LAST EDITED ON Jan-12-02 AT 08:58 AM (EST)It's a nice idea, although I could foresee more than a few problems in anyone agreeing on what should be modelled! I too would love to see some of the original stock reworked to the standards that we now enjoy from the likes of TA, 3DTrains, Dekosoft, and the much-missed CLW.I think part of the problem lies in that (quite ubderstandably) everyone wants to model their own back yard wherever possible. And while all the numerous reskins are of interest to those that made them and those that know and like that line, their usefulness is undeniably diminished somewhat by the lack of appropriate routes on which to run them. The number of downloads in the file library speaks for itself, but how many of these get used more than a couple of times after the novelty has worn off, when there is no conceivable reason for that loco to be running on the NEC, Marias, in Europe, etc?The concept of a committee to decide what projects should be developed is nice, but I'm thinking it would just create endless arguments on these forums. So since routes are the hardest to make and distribute, my vote goes for developing extra stock/improve default stock to use with the default lines in the game. I wish I could do it myself, if only I had the time, software, and (most of all) the talent!

Jan-12-02, 10:24 AM (EST) 3. "RE: evolution of the idea" To put it bluntly: I make add-ons because I like making them. And I make the add-ons that I want to make. And I couldn't care less about what any self-appointed committee thinks that I should make. If people don't like what I make, fine, then just don't use the stuff.Or in other words FORGET IT.If the members of the committee (or should we call them the "MSTS Polit Bureau"?) don't like what is being made then make your own stuff. But don't even try to tell others what they should or should not make.(Where do people get these weird ideas from?) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-12-02, 11:35 AM (EST) 4. "RE: evolution of the idea" In a sence I have to agree with svante.People could spend hours fixing the MSTS default product, and it still isn't going to be close to as good as the product coming out from 3rd party developers.Fix the MSTS stock Intermodal stuff, and there is NO way it will still be even close to the work of Xacto or svante.Or Jason Dilworths Sd-40's.......lets not even talk about what would have needed to be fixed on the default SD-40...NIGHTMARE !!Just my 3.4 cents worth ( Canadian to American exchange )Tim Kent

Jan-12-02, 11:46 AM (EST) 5. "RE: evolution of the idea" I think people should build what they want - and if other people don't like, they don't need to download it.For example - I painted an E8 into Conrail livery - I have no realistic place for these to run, but they look nice, and I had a good set of images to base the repaint on.If we only created engines for the routes we have, there would be almost no English trains (certainly no steam locomotives except Midland Railway), and all of those great Dutch trains would not exist.Designers are free to build what they like - but if you have suggestions and good sets of images, I'm sure they would like to hear from you.Euston

Jan-12-02, 12:12 PM (EST) 9. "RE: evolution of the idea" Hey guys,Of course everyone should only build what they want to build - otherwise what would be the point in doing it?My agreement about a "committee" was perhaps taken the wrong way (or did I just put it the wrong way?!!) - such a group could not and should not tell anyone what they should and shouldn't model. Such a group would probably in principle be like TA, where a larger group of people voluntarily get together and pool their ideas, resources and talent towards a common project.Tim, you're quite right about the default MSTS stock - it is more effort than it's probably worth to re-model it. As Svante has already done with the intermodals, it would be far preferable just to see it/them re-done entirely!Personally, I only have two extra routes downloaded, and both of these are variations/additions to the default routes, so I stick by my point that it would be nice to have more quality stuff for the default routes! There is no doubt that locos appropriate to the default routes are far more popular - just check some of the download figures for BNSF or NEC stuff in the file library. However as Euston pointed out, this shouldn't be at the expense of the great variety of alternative stock available. At the end of the day, we (well, not me personally, but we as a community) make whatever takes our fancy, and I didn't mean for one moment that it should be any other way. I just wish there was someone out there dedicated to modelling NEC equipment!

You will see that there are not additions!Personnally I think there is an other problem with all that great stuff that is coming out and hopefully will keep getting out in the future. (No hint ) is the lack of Activities for them.
LongHairedWizzard have already done a great job and accordingly to his posts he is doing a great job now. But when an Activity editor dares to come with an activity for non default stuff, he (where are the women? ) will get a bunch of protests that people want activities only for default stuff as they have to download so much.
But to me, it is somewhat boring, to Explore route with new stuff and don't have any AI, don't have any timetable, no drop offs, etc.Dick van den Hoven

Jan-13-02, 05:25 AM (EST) 16. "RE: evolution of the idea" I tried to encourage users to add customised locos to my NS activity.
When I download an activity pack, I often change the locomotives in the pack.Perhaps activities should be included as default with more locos.Euston

Jan-13-02, 02:39 PM (EST) 18. "RE: evolution of the idea" Actually Euston ya done good on the CR E-8... I did my homework and for business train service they were "Pullman Green" which is what you tried to depict... Now if we could get some one to "skin" a matching set of coaches into pullman green (maybe the american flyer coaches)... And You produced a 2nd skin with a different number we could have a real Conrail Business Train!------Chuck Schneider---------

Jan-13-02, 04:32 AM (EST) 14. "RE: evolution of the idea" How can you say that most models are useless? I know of several models used in several activities from various routes.Everyone does seem to lean toward their favorites and several models have been made that I don't use, but I know from reading posts that some of them are very popular. As far as choosing the best simmers, there is no way to do this without a lot of conflict. I enjoy the work of some folks more than others, however that doesn't mean the ones I like are better than others. The bottom line, I feel, is that everyone bought MSTS and they should enjoy it however they want. When I bought it I had no idea that just a few months after I got it I would rarely use the default routes and equipment because some talented folks gave me the option to run some of the routes and equipment I prefer. If you guys feel that strongly about this idea, put together a group of folks who feel the same. I don't think anyone would be bothered by that, but if you suggest a committee to try to govern the Train-Sim community, there will be a lot of bad feelings. You asked what everyone thought and I am just giving my opinion. Thanks,

Jan-12-02, 11:47 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Hold on......." I've got an idea myself...Here is how it goes:1. Make a TOTALLY NEW shape file (Lets say, for the PS2 hopper) in TSM, or another program.2. Texture it with the default textures3. Override the original default files, and you'll have nice cars in default activities.I'll go first. I will re-do the MX hopper...BOY DOES THAT THING NEED WORK!Kurt Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-12-02, 01:06 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Hold on......." The BNSF hopper does have awful textures, yes, but the reason most of the textures are so awful, is because the car is ugly!!! Try having Judge Splitter go and add txtures to it..it still won't look good. The car makes the textures look worse. Check out my new PLFX hopper. New is on top, default on bottom.

Jan-13-02, 04:18 AM (EST) 13. "RE: Hold on......." Thanks for the vote of confidence Dick, I appeciate it I have an alternative that would be kewl if someone wants to tackle it. (I'm way to busy right now to do it myself)My Idea is for someone to choose a prototypical set of add-ons to use for say....the Marias Pass route.
then to upload a set of consist files that would replace the original consist files. These new files would reference Prototypical and high quality engines and cars such as a BN GP35 in place of the default BNSF GP38 or the TA BN SD70MAC for the default Dash9.
these files should still use some of the better default freight cars such as the Logger, Centerbeams, and the BN Hicube Boxcars but could replace the intermodal cars with svantes stuff and use the funnel flow tankers instead of the default one.
add the Bethgons, 100ton Coal hoppers, the new Hi-Hip coveredhoppers and now your cookin with gas!!! It would be relatively easy for someone to alter the consists (just time consuming though) and the person who downloads the set would just overwrite the current default consist files (worst comes to worst they could always reinstall the default consists)The person would have to include a Readme that accurately lists the file names, zip file names, and the folder names as they appear in the trainset directory. The best part is that Once the person downloads and installs both the new consist package and all the required add-ons, then all the activities would autmagically be altered to use the newer, nicer engines and cars.Just a thought!!!!Longhairedwizard Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-13-02, 02:46 PM (EST) 19. "RE: Hold on......." LonghairedWizard, I like that idea. I myself am playing with the idea to create some consists with the TA SD70's and the Betgon Hoppers and the Svante Container cars.
But IHMO it is very pity to get so good stuff and can only play Explore Route with it.Dick van den Hoven

Jan-13-02, 01:04 PM (EST) 17. "RE: Hold on......." Hey all,I like where this thread is going , but I feel we also have to
get the unit dimensions worked out so that we all are on the level measuring field when it comes to unit sizes....we have seen some of the work from folks (like mine) that seems to be out of proportion to the rest of the new models being made...mine are some of these and I wish to fix them if needed....so I ask for input from all about what is a good/correct starting point for the scale to use in MSTS.Is it 1" = .0254 meters ? Is this the scale most models are at.Let me know your feelings on this and then we can get on with making our new units and they will match-up with everyone elses. Thanks
