Jan-09-02, 11:56 PM (EST) "Japanese Steam" You might find operations on the Hisatsu line a little more interesting with this trainset, now available in the File Library.
The Hitsatsu is the only one of the original MSTS routes that has a shortline feel to it, and the scenery is among the best.
The Mogul locomotive is a vintage one, built between 1914 and the early 1930s. There's at least one of them still making tourist runs in Kyushu -- occasionally even on the Hisatsu itself. Here are a couple of views.

Yes it's got a crew! The download includes five 2-axle freight wagons. Spot 'em anywhere you want.
Switching at Sakamoto.
Crossing the Kuma River. Inset: the real thing. You also get a working cab, and it's even the right one for this loco!
Here's a triptych view. See my post in the Cab Forum last week for more detailed screenshots.
Hope you enjoy driving this as much as I do.Rick Vernon

Thanks and SWEET CAB!

Jan-10-02, 07:31 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Japanese Steam" Got your engine and like it a lot and have used it often. Great work..well appreciated. However I would like to add some "positive criticism" if poss.
Can something done about the wheels ..as the irregular movement spoils the side view. The .eng file is much too powerful..you are using the 380 eng which is designed to pull heavy trains up mountains...I have replaced the values by the ones of a 2-6-0 brtish tank engine...seems more "natural". The cab view is really excellent too but could the view point be higher up and looking down a little bit so that you could see through the front window and also see the firebox.??? shouldn't be too difficult. I appreciate that doing a steam engine is very difficult and demanding that's why your work is appreciated ..I just hope that v.1 will be near perfect.!!!!
Thanks again. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-11-02, 02:07 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Japanese Steam" Thanks for your feedback. There are a few other errors besides (can you find them?!). This loco will never be "finished," but you've got to stop somewhere. As the readme file implied, I claim no expertise in the area of locomotive physics. After all I'm not a mechanical engineer. Wait! I am that, but in the building-construction field. Speaking of which I'll be boarding a plane to Taiwan in a few hours and will be away from my after-hours obsession for a 6 weeks. My next R&R is in early March and I'll try to fix any bugs and stuff people bring to my attention, either in this forum or via e-mail, and issue an update. Then I'd like to take what I've learned and the work on something with a broader appeal. Probably stick with steam, though. As for the cab view, I had a tough time with that. It seems like at almost any angle one control or another gets obscured. I had to "adjust" some of their locations a little. I have to wonder how much of that goes on.Anyway, glad you like it and thanks again.Rick Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-11-02, 01:51 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Japanese Steam" Jim,It's fixed. The trick, for anyone that's interested, is this. Place the rectangular water graphic (which starts life as a semitransparent .tga image and which is the graphic that goes with the control) over the level gauge. Then make the area occupied by any convenient nearby control big enough so it hides the water graphic and set it in place. (You can rearrange the layering order by editing the .cvf file. First items on the list are rendered first.) Use the alpha channel to "cut holes" wherever the water needs to show. MSTS does the rest. Mind you, the water level moves up and down, but I don't know if it moves the -right- amount. That's a Kuju issue. Of course if the water level indicator is rectangular and straight up and down, as in the Golsdorf, you don't have to worry about any of the preceding.I just know you wanted all this information!Rick Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-11-02, 04:48 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Japanese Steam" Rick,
that was a splendid idea of you to tackle a Japanese steamer! It's good to see somebody's taking care of those engines rather "unknown" to us Westerners. In fact, I've been hoping for a long time that somebody would do some new rolling stock to spice up operations on the Japanese lines in TS. I'm sure that together we'll be able to fix those little flaws that might still be found on the C 50 and cars. The only thing that REALLY spoils the experience of driving on the TS Japanese routes for me is that they are not truly narrow gauge. The "broad" tracks and cubsequently the broad chassis just don't look right under the rather diminutive body of the C 50...but I don't blame you for this, because TS did not leave you another choice.
I really hope somebody (either Kuju or somebody from the TS community) will find out one day how to enable support for different gauges...i.e. maybe rework the Japanese lines to use narrow-gauge trackage based on Okrasa Ghia's designs (it doesn't HAVE to be true down to a fraction of an inch!), and subsequently have the chassis of the TS Japanese stock "narrowed" to fit the tracks optically. Hey, ANYTHING goes if you just want it bad enough!!!Anyway, GOOD JOB again, Rick!
