Jan-10-02, 04:23 PM (EST) 12. "RE: Working on the "Big Blow" Gas Turbine..." LAST EDITED ON Jan-10-02 AT 04:25 PM (EST)It is the first unit of a three-unit "Big Blow" gas turbine locomotive. The unit displayed contained the control cab and various auxillary equipment. A second unit contained the turbine, the electric generators and associated equipement. A third unit was a fuel tender as these locomotives had voracious appetites. The combination used a total of twelve traction motors under the "A" and "B" units. The combination generated 8,500 h.p. as built and was upgraded to 10,000 h.p. after a few years. Union Pacific used these locos to move freight over the vast western expances of the system in North American. They ran from the late fifties to the late sixties/early seventies when changing economics lead to their demise. It should be noted that since the turbine was as loud as its jet engine cousins, they were not appreciated in urban areas. There are probably a couple of threads a few pages back dealing with these locomotives.Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-10-02, 08:34 PM (EST) 14. "RE: Working on the "Big Blow" Gas Turbine..." Now Don't forget this Locomotive had an extra Power Unit fitted within one of the units, and will need different sounds when operating on the secondary engine! As the Gas Turbine used phenominal amounts of fuel even when running at idle (and that was the cause of their demise), a secondary Diesel engine was provided to move the Locomotive on to the train, or Light Engine as we say here.
I have a video (somewhere) that talks about this point. In this video the locomotive sets back on to its train relatively quietly, but a few minutes later all hell breaks loose, and it immediatly departs! What I do not know is if all Turbines were thus fitted Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I can try, but I can't say you for sure, that I can add more details...Jens-ChrisBTW, the Cab loco took about 6 hours for model and texturing.
Then I worked still half an hour to delete some vertices, to reach the limit for accepting by MSTS.

> Hmm and how many vertices is the limit ?, l'd like to know please as l think its a lot higher than you have there, l have compiled 5000+ vertices with no problems and l doubt that there is more than 3000-3500 there on the "A" unit, if there is l suggest you take a very big knife and get rid of some of the excessive fat, change the nose shape to suit the Big blows and the rest is pretty accurate and looking good.Michael

Jan-12-02, 06:55 PM (EST) 33. "RE: The whole monster..." Hey I wouldn't know where to find info or even the sounds for the turbine. As memory serves from seeing and hearing them on film, The turbine was pretty much wide open while pulling massive trains thru Wyoming with very little pitch shifting. The prime mover in the lead or A unit was used only if the turbine failed, which suffered turbine blade failure quite often. One idea I have if the sounds can be found, on the .eng sms, use SL 5 for the prime mover in the A unit kept at idle, and use SL 3 for the turbine with a few pitch shifts. Variable 2 should work fine for this.If JensChris would like, I can take a crack this in a few days, experimenting with Acela sounds.Chuck

Jan-12-02, 09:52 PM (EST) 38. "RE: The whole monster..." I am guessing that a correct gas turbine sound would be pure jet engine (meaning an old commerical jet or a military fighter)rather than the sound of a fanjet(high bypass) engine used commonly today in passenger planes.
Modern turbine/generator (steam or gas) units run at a constant fixed speed in order to maintain the correct frequency (ie 60 cycles) at the generator output links. A governor system detects the changing RPM caused by a changing load placed on the generator and supply more or less fuel or steam to the turbine as required to maintain the appropriate RPM.
There might be a possiblity that the UP turbo/generator unit produced a pure DC output to the traction motors which would mean the turbine would accelerate up and down according to the throttle position, which would mean a variable jet sound.
Either way.........noisey and dirty....Chris-Jens wonderful creations look too clean, but I`ll tak`em Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-13-02, 06:49 AM (EST) 45. "RE: The whole monster..." I would gladly appreciate someone doing the sounds for my turbine. Perhaps you know how to make a big exhaust for the Turbine-Unit ?? The second unit is always at idle in MSTS, so the exhaust, that comes out isn't very much. I tried to accumulate three exhausts on the same place, but it doesn't look very realistic...BTW, where is the exhauster (?) on the turbine unit ??
I made two exhausters on top of the middle roof box.

Weight: 408 tons or 816,000 lbs (for the A&B units together)
Axles: 12 on C-C trucks
Length: 179 Feet, including tender
Top Speed: 76 miles per hourFull load fuel consumption: 800 gallons of residual fuel (Bunker C) or roughly 14 gallons per mile.I hope that helps you out a bit.Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-13-02, 00:01 AM (EST) 41. "RE: Working on the "Big Blow" Gas Turbine..." I am not an expert on the setup of locos, and I don't know if this was thought of yet, but I am going to bring it up. Since a turbine at full throttle is loud, would there be a way to have that sound be the dominating sound when in outside view. I doubt you are going to hear any crickets or any other sound for that manner when the turbine is at full throttle. The other would be the standard cab view. How much of the sound would have been have been heard in the actual train? Was the cab sound proofed or did they have to wear hearing protection? That is one excellent looking train. Keep it up.Edward K. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-13-02, 04:12 AM (EST) 42. "RE: Working on the "Big Blow" Gas Turbine..." As far as I've been told, the turbine was more or less based on a JT3 aviation engine, but modified for constant-speed running. That means the above statement would be correct - the pitch of the turbine noise would not change under load, only the volume. Hmmm...could that be recreated with the .SMS "language"?D.M.

Jan-13-02, 05:37 AM (EST) 43. "RE: Working on the "Big Blow" Gas Turbine..." All depends on the sound files you use.Just have a load of jet engine files, with different noise levels. If anyone has a custom horn too, these always add to the fun, although how someone could fail to hear one of these at a crossing...The loco and train look great.Euston

Jan-13-02, 02:37 PM (EST) 48. "RE: Working on the "Big Blow" Gas Turbine..." after that's released, hopefully someone will make a challenger or the 844 and we could use the tank units as water bottles, like they usually do during excursions. oh BTW, how are those UP Coaches coming along? Jan-14-02, 12:54 PM (EST) 50. "RE: Working on the "Big Blow" Gas Turbine..." here is an idea for the turbine unit exhaust. Configure it as a steam locomotive and it will then smoke a whole lot. The smoke would be white then..maybe there is a way to change the color???? I just thought of this. I dont know if its an option or not but its my 2 cents worth. Thanks,

Jan-20-02, 08:45 PM (EST) 52. "RE: Working on the "Big Blow" Gas Turbine..." Nice to see this on the track finally your much better than me LOL.anyway one point, IF YOU INTERESTED I'm sure all the critics come out when you show something but there is one thing you might want to change slightly and I don't know if its been pointed out.The angle on you roof vents is way to much if your interested, when I built my one , I rounded up quite a few pictures I can send you some pictures of the area.It is a complicated engine to get right, it has a lot of hidden angles, plus there are very few photos and fewer accurate drawings,so Well done.on a interesting note did you know that the exhaust rotates on these things even after shutdown, otherwise they would bend in the heat, Bloody things must have made a right noise even with the engine off.
