Jan-03-02, 06:31 PM (EST) "Alco RS11 detail question" I have a few questions regarding the Alco RS11 details. I've been looking for some photographs of the rooflines of these units, but haven't had much luck so far.I know that you can spot the difference between dynamic-brake-equipped units and non-db units by counting the number of the grills between the cab and the intercooler on the long hood (if I understand it correctly, DB-equipped units typically had five evenly-spaced grills, while non-DB units had three grills located closer to the intercooler). In some of the photographs, there appears to be a long box-like enclosure along the top of these units between the cab and the exhaust stack. Unfortunately, I can't tell if this enclosure contains fans, nor have I been able to determine if the enclosure is present on non-DB units.I guess my main question is this: what should an RS11 roofline look like on both DB and non-DB units?I also have a secondary question: does anyone have any photos of the control stand/cab area? I've never had the pleasure of being inside an Alco...Cameron Lashley Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-03-02, 07:01 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Alco RS11 detail question" Cameron,Good to hear from you and hopefully you will be able to bring more locomotives alive for Train Sim.I did some looking and found some RS11 pictures, here.Message Areas - "Alco RS11 detail question" – image 1
That is an LV RS11. You can tell that the uprising right behind the cab that the locomotive has dynos.
Message Areas - "Alco RS11 detail question" – image 2
That is an NYC rs11, it doesn't have quite the uprising so I don't believe that it has dynos.

Thats a good one, you see the uprising that is in line with the Penn central lettering, that loco has dynos.
Hope those help,Chris

Jan-04-02, 01:17 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Alco RS11 detail question" Actually, I'm qite a fan of these RS models. It's far more complicated than one would think with the dynamic brakes, and such. (Believe me I've had quite a brain-ache trying to get them all straight)..For example, the LV RS11 you show in the 1st picture above is actually and LV RS-32. Who'd 'a thunk it?? I'll write back and explain when I have a bit more time.-Christian Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-04-02, 05:14 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Alco RS11 detail question" Me again,Send me an email Cameron, I don't have the material on this computer but I do at home. I have some top down views of RS's and Century's if you want 'em. Or I can show you where they are...I can explain more about the mid to late RS series if you want or I can do in this forum. Again...low on resources here at work, but I can help you later...
-Christian:wilsonchristian@hotmail.comBTW. I changed my mind. I think that LV picture is a RS36 not RS32...hehe-L8r

Jan-04-02, 05:47 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Alco RS11 detail question" I really think that the LV unit pictured is an RS11.LV400 through 403 where all sent to Paduach in the early 70's for rebuilds. As Paduach was famous at the time for chopping noses they all came back with the chop job.Although the unit may look like an RS32 or 36 I believe its an RS11.Chris

Jan-05-02, 01:17 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Alco RS11 detail question" You're probably right, man. Especially if you have a good source on the history. Its just that window that gets me. Many locos were made with the one pane on the first production run, but then there are about a million examples of railroads not liking this (cost & difficulty of replacment) and asking the manufacturer to keep the window as two piece on later production runs or models.
It doesn't make sense that in chopping the nose, they'd go with the one pane as I can't think of railraod that liked it.It don't make sense! One piece of evidence does point toward your RS11 really well. That is the aft filter opening which is a screened cover (and not flush), found only on the RS11 (and also on the first C424, but I won't get into that
It looks like this WAS/IS an RS11, and was probably brought up to spec. w/respect to the filters on current catalogued models (RS32 and RS36). In fact I have a very similar RS11 picture here, but it is high hood!I've just found that no RS32 or RS36 was ordered by LV either..Just modified, I guess..Interesting, though..Well, if this little research excercise has taught us nothing. At least we know not to trust the filters to tell us whether or where they had dynamics...I've even seen them crammed in the short hood with the steam generator....Thanks for listening to my rant,-ChristianNext post: Dynamics in 4-axle Century's. Jan-05-02, 05:49 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Alco RS11 detail question" Here's what I have so far:Message Areas - "Alco RS11 detail question" – image 4 I still need to add the bogies, wheelsets, and a few minor details such has grabirons, horns, and bell, but is seems to be coming along quiet well. Also, I want to create a 3D-modeled interior, but I need some reference photos to work with... Jan-06-02, 00:14 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Alco RS11 detail question" Nice locomotive man!!
Keep up the excellent work!!Is that a Dash 9 fuel tank? Actually, the fuel-tank on the RS11 doesn't encapsulate the air cylinder, man.I have a link where you can find the operator's manual with pictures of the controls, stand and cab, etc..I'd post it here. But I'm pretty sure the owner doesn't like outside links to his website.Try a search involving the terms "gelwood" and "dnaco".-Christian Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-06-02, 00:26 AM (EST) 9. "RE: Alco RS11 detail question" Actually, the larger-capacity fuel tank was an option more commonly found on Canadian (MLW) locos, but also on some Alcos. I know that the smaller tank was more common, but I just don't like the way it looked (too gimpy for my tastes)...Message Areas - "Alco RS11 detail question" – image 5Cameron Lashley Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-09-02, 08:28 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Alco RS11 detail question" Gorgeous model. Would you consider an MLW RS18 variant? (I believe the biggest difference is no nose notches but there could be other differences). I love the details, esp. the brakewheel in the nose. I hope there's not too much detail for MSTS! Jan-08-02, 10:16 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Alco RS11 detail question" LAST EDITED ON Jan-08-02 AT 10:21 AM (EST)LV 400 thru 403 were RS11s delivered in 1960.
They were the first low nose units delivered to an eastern road.
Production of the RS32 was from 6/61 to 6/62, of the RS36 from 2/62 to 8/63I'd like to see a high nose RS11 in LV colors as well, the Valley had a couple of them leased from the Pennsy/PC. They had their original numbers, but LV livery and i know of at least 5 different schemes they wore while driving for the LV.Werner Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
