Jan-03-02, 12:32 PM (EST) "Tilting trains progress?" Hi, anybody know how the R+D department is getting on with developing tilting trains? It'd be nice to see some working tilt on trains. I'd like a Virgin Pendolino, or an APT. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-04-02, 11:39 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Tilting trains progress?" Hey Thomas.R & D Department = Research & Design Department.
He's asking if anyone (Essentially we users are the R&D department) have made progress with tilting trains.Of course, the above is just my personal interpretation, and may be totally wrong. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-04-02, 03:40 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Tilting trains progress?" You do realize that if this is achieved, it should then become a simple matter to build working roller coasters in MSTS. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-04-02, 03:54 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Tilting trains progress?" Perhaps Micro$oft should take a look at Theme Park World for ideas on where to go for MSTS2 Except we know they won't, on the principle that Theme Park World is a program that Actually Works! Jan-04-02, 08:27 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Tilting trains progress?" Nobody who is waiting for tilting trains should hold their breath. They will asphixiate. Do a search... and there were countless people trying to make trains tilt... and some even got the track to tilt and the train just plows right on through the tracks and ground without titling. It's coded such that trains can not exhibit any tilting whatsoever, even if the track tilts.-Andy

Jan-05-02, 08:43 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Tilting trains progress?" Whilst actual tilting of trains (either through track cant or actual tilting trains) might be an impossibility in this version of MSTS (who knows what the future might bring!), you may be interested to know that an APT is being developed for MSTS on the following site:<http://www.atomic-systems.com/~crewevlw/>I expect that it will probably eventually be downloaded to <www.uktrainsim.com> and possibly hosted on this site as well. Jan-05-02, 02:06 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Tilting trains progress?" in theory, you could make a tilting train. But to do that you need to re code the whole sim, which is a HELL of alot of work, and alot of what-if, and daring, hell, as a student in my comp programming class I know that by missing one 'l' or one ';' could crash your computer into kingdom kong. Jan-08-02, 05:12 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Tilting trains progress?" I'm working on it at the moment. It is possible but it requires a bit of a maverick approach to modelling the train itself. You need to model a third bogie in the centre of the train then screw up it's pivot point in 3dsmax. When that bogie corners, if you've got the pivot point right, instead of changing it's heading, it rolls (or pitches, if you have it wrong). You then need to attach all the train geometry to that bogie and have a dummy "MAIN" node to contain it all.
I'll post some screenshots when I get something worthwhile.Message Areas - "Tilting trains progress?" – image 1

Jan-09-02, 00:21 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Tilting trains progress?" I already have tilted (banked) guideway sections ready to go incase this tilting business is sucessful. A previous post featuring my maglev train and guideway shows this. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-09-02, 12:43 PM (EST) 12. "RE: Tilting trains progress?" Chris, That's just the way I'd of thought to do it, using a body acting as a bogie (when I was thinkin 'bout it long time ago - you see, i dont have TSM ) That'd be great to have a working tilt mechanism. Is there any way in which an internal view can be 'slaved' to the train movement (say having the passenger view to tilt?). Clearly the movement would be on the order of 3-5 degrees, just large enough to notice, but small enough to not be too intrusive.Matt

Jan-09-02, 12:50 PM (EST) 13. "RE: Tilting trains progress?" From my experience so far, I think the passenger views are limited to heading- and pitch-changes only. I don't think you can introduce roll changes. So you can go around corners and up and down hills, but you can't roll down an embankment.Rolling down embankments? Clearly no use if you're modelling British trains then Message Areas - "Tilting trains progress?" – image 2
