Jun-29-01, 11:34 PM (EST) "Engine Bug? (Attention - Wurger)" All,I was playing around with Wurger's great airbreak fix (engup002). My only problem with it was that the Dash-9s could not pull the Noon Freight up Bison hill in that activity. So I got clever and restored all engine values to the engine, leaving the brakes, lights, and such as was.It still wouldn't pull. This got really confusing for a while until I finally took the original and changed one value at a time. And guess what I found? There is a set of lines that SEEM to control sanding, specifically...Sanding (6mph)
NumWheels (1)Wurger changed them to 74mph and 4 wheels (I assume to represent sanding working at higher speeds and more than one axle).Turns out that when you change NumWheels from 1 to 4, you lose a great deal of pulling power. On the first hill of Noon Freight (the one your begin climbing at the start of the game) I got the following speed results at RUN 8...AXLES SPEED OVER TOP
1 30+
4 15And this is WITHOUT sanding. Is it just me, or is this value working really wierd? Any ideas?BTW, Wurger, this is not a slam on your fine work. I love what you've done so far and look forward to running your engines done the long slope beyond bison siding with limited brakes. Its just that your work uncovered this. Jun-30-01, 01:23 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Engine Bug? (Attention - Wurger)" Mr. Wurger's work is much closer to the real thing unfortunately I think you have uncovered a problem with the grades being exaggerated on Marias Pass in MSTS. Because he has made the locomotives perform more realistic they will not pull the Noon Mixed Freight up the grade near Bison because the grade is too steep.Maybe Mr. Wurger will hear your suggestion about the sanders.TAP

Jul-02-01, 11:15 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Engine Bug? (Attention - Wurger)" Hello Bluevoss and all,The problem of not being able to pull the noon freight up the hiil at Bison is due to the fact that the grades on Marias are completely off, as in WAY too steep.
The best fix is to use the activity editor to edit the consist and add another loco or two to make it up the steepest hill (Bison Westbound) or Java (eastbound). As for the following lines in the .eng file:
Sanding(74mph) - This value determines at what speed sanding is not available. If it is set at 6mph, you won't be getting sand above that speed.NumWheels (1) - This is in the .eng file twice. In the first location near the top, it determines the grip under braking. In the second location, under the engine parameters, it determines how "slippery" an engine is. (it's not related to sanding at all).
NumWheels is actually a divisor for the value in adheasion when under power only. I set NumWheels to ( 4 ) to get the -9 to start slipping at less than about 13mph when at or just beyond what would be the max tractive effort. If you use sand at this point, you will regain grip and continue to climb if the grade is not too steep.
I use the projected speed (F4) to see if I'm slipping since the wheelslip light does not work on the -9 (or any of the engines that I can tell).I hope this clears it up and thanks for the comments!

I set NumWheels to ( 4 ) to get the -9 to start slipping at less than about 13mph when at or just beyond what would be the max tractive effort. The real Dash 9 along with other modern locomotives have a anti wheel slip feature. When one axle starts to slip the amount of power is reduced in that traction motor to stop any wheel slip. So usually regardless of the grade or the tractive effort the wheels rarely slip in a Dash 9. And even more rarely will the sanders come on automatically or the Engineer will use them manually.TAP

Jul-02-01, 04:34 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Engine Bug? (Attention - Wurger)" There is a variable to set traction control... I think it's WheelSlip(0) set it to 1 for traction control.I don't think that MSTS simulates the traction control of the -9 or cut's the power back automaticly. Hell, they don't even have a working wheelslip indicator that I've seen! You do bring up a good point though TAP, I'll have to play around with this some. I just basicly used the settings I did to reflect the pulling power that the train forces calculator told me to expect.Do you use sand much on the -9? Dry rail, Wet or frosty? Any thoughts or suggestions for improvements feel free to email me!Wurger Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
