Do a search of the forums and you'll find a post stating that an import script had been developed. The method of doing it though will likely remain in the possesion of those who have managed to write a script or converter that will do it. There's a fear if such a thing became openly available there would be rampant plagarism. Personally I would like to have something like this to fix the default MSTS models without having to rebuild them from scratch.

You don't need the .s file to edit graphics!! the graphics are stored in the .ace files.....The only reason for wanting to get at the .s file which is a shape file is to alter the model! and in general designers don't want you fiddling with their models. If a designer wants you to have access to his model then he'll release the 3DS file. But it's rare for that to happen! In short the answer is you can't do it! and nobody is going to release a util which will allow you to. The util mentioned in another post answer to this is not and will never be made available to you.Best Regards,
Julian (Fozzy The Bear)

I agree with Fozzy, you can get very possessive of your model in mesh form However, the other side of the coin is that often people can learn from dissecting another person's work. That's okay so long as it doesn't leave their computer (without permission of course.)Don't let the computer WIN! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-08-02, 05:07 PM (EST) 10. "RE: someone knows how to convert a .s (shape) MSTS file in 3ds (3dstudio)??" Lets just say that if this ever does become a publicly available piece of software - to convert .s files back to .3ds, I'll be the first to withdraw all my models. I suspect most other authors will do the same, then we can live with the shite that MS gave us.
To be able to reverse-engineer the .s file will kill off the ability of the author to prove ownership of the model. If that happens, the market will be flooded with crap re-conversions. I don't want any part of that and I doubt anyone else does either.................![]()

Jan-08-02, 09:00 PM (EST) 11. "RE: someone knows how to convert a .s (shape) MSTS file in 3ds (3dstudio)??" I agreee with Chris. In fact, I'm not overjoyed about the ability to reverse-engineer the .ace files, since it creates the risk that someone can apply new textures to one of my models and then pass it off as their own. It's far more difficult to build a model from scratch, texture map it properly, and perform all the necessary engine file editing, than it is from someone to simply open an existing, already-textured shape file and make a few minor modifications. This is what sets the community of 3D modelers apart from the repainters. If there is an aftermarket model that you would like to see edited, your best bet is to send a politely-worded email to the author of that model, and see if they would be willing to provide you with either a .3ds file (sort of unlikely), or a modified .s file (more likely). I've found that most of the 3D modelers in the MSTS community are a reasonable bunch...All of that being said, the MS/Kuju models are crap, anyway. They are, for the most part, out-of-scale, and not textured particularly well. I looked at the dash9.3ds file that is in the sample folder, and I wouldn't even want to try to fix it...Just my two cents on the topic.Cameron Lashley Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
