Jan-01-02, 02:43 PM (EST) "Articulated well cars" I've had a number of requests for articulated 3-car and 5-car sets of well cars so I thought I'd give it a try. And the pictures show what I've come up with. What you see are 3-car and 5-car articulated ribside well cars (count the number of trucks in the pictures...) where the trucks work/turn just the way they should and that could be made to carry any and all containers I've made. The only problems with them are a) it would be a logistical nightmare to make them in different liveries and with different loads, and b) the average MSTS user can't handle them since the sets are made up of four different cars that have to be put together in a specific order in the consist editor (A-B-C for the 3-car sets and A-B-D-B-C for the 5-car sets).They will not be available for download for quite a while, so there's no use bugging me about it, because I need to make new textures for them and I also have to fix the couplers so they use CouplerUniqueType and can't be connected to anything else because that would look real odd. Plus there's a lot of the standalone well cars waiting to be uploaded.

"RE: Articulated well cars" LAST EDITED ON Jan-01-02 AT 02:58 PM (EST)You mention CouplerUniqueType how do you define one coupler on one end as this and the other one normal in other words locomotive end and to other cars. You must be about the fastest skin maker. Thanks for the all great works. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-01-02, 03:28 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Articulated well cars" You specify two different couplers in the eng/wag-file.So my articulateds have variations of the following code in the eng-files:
Coupling (
Type ( Bar )
CouplerTypeUnique ( articulated )
Spring (
Stiffness ( 3e6N/m 5e6N/m )
Damping ( 3e6N/m 3e6N/m )
Break ( 7.6e7N 7.6e7N )
r0 ( 2cm 2.5cm )
)
Velocity ( 0.1m/s )
)
Coupling (
Type ( Automatic )
Spring (
Stiffness ( 3e6N/m 5e6N/m )
Damping ( 3e6N/m 3e6N/m )
Break ( 3.6e7N 3.6e7N )
r0 ( 2.5cm 5cm )
)
Velocity ( 0.1m/s )
)
The A-cars (the front ones) and the C-cars (the rear ones) have both coupler types in the wag-file, the B-cars and the D-cars (the two different types of middle cars) have just the Type ( Bar ) part. Using coupler type Bar also means that the cars can't be disconnected from each other in the game, like in the real world. If you want to do some switching you must switch complete 3-car or 5-car sets. Coupler type Bar could also be used with my standalone well cars to simulate drawbar-connected cars. Jan-01-02, 05:33 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Articulated well cars" That's some great info. I'll need it to make the .wag files for my upcoming Transwaggon Hirrs4. Now I just have to figure out how to texture it. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-01-02, 06:54 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Articulated well cars" Thanks that helps a lot. Uploaded a set Roadrailers to this site messed with the wag file to get them to work but the physics are still off lowered weight didn't know how to change rest copied coupler info out of a fixed coupler passenger car to remove slack it helped. Jan-02-02, 08:37 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Articulated well cars" If you're having any problems with the Bar/Uniquetype definitions, I've gotten them working perfectly on all my steamers. Just remember that the first definition applies to the rear coupler (if the unit is facing forwards in the consist editor), and the second is the front. If you already know this, just ignore me. Jan-02-02, 09:16 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Articulated well cars" I have no problems with the unique couplers... You can download a 5-car set of APL Stacktrain articulateds, with bar/unique couplers, from my website at http://www.wendel.nu/msts/. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-02-02, 11:36 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Articulated well cars" instead of doing A,B,C, why don't you do A,B,A and A,B,D,B,C to A,C,B,C,A
A - normal + bar clip
B - tray, no wheels
c - tray, wheels one end, bar clip Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-03-02, 06:44 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Articulated well cars" ????Why should I?I need three different shapes for the car, front, middle and rear, where the rear end car has a brake wheel and cylinder, and both the front and rear cars have normal couplers at one end. The front car and the middle each have one real truck and the rear car has two. The middle car should be able to ride anywhere in between, one of them in a 3-car set and three of them in a 5-car set. Three different 3D-shapes but four different sets of sd-files (which must be manually edited) since I have to live with the fact that MSTS works best with symmetrical cars where the center of the car is right between the two sets of trucks (that MSTS also assumes that the cars have). So I trick MSTS by using one real truck and one invisible phoney truck for the front and middle shapes (and two real trucks for the rear shape). And by adjusting the length in the sd-file I make MSTS believe that the cars are symmetrical.It's all been carefully thought out, and it works. With a minimum of job and a minimum of 3D-shapes.So if we name the three different 3D-shapes A, B and C, and the four different sd-files a, b, c and d we get the following order in a 5-car articulated set:
3D-shapes A-B-B-B-C
Sd-files a-b-d-b-c
If I would want to make a 7-car set (not that there are any of those in real life) the order would be:
3D-shapes A-B-B-B-B-B-C
Sd-files a-b-d-b-d-b-c
And so on ad infineum. (But this way of doing it only works with uneven numbers of cars in a car set).
