Dec-31-01, 11:14 AM (EST) "P.C.C. request!" Any of you designer's working of President's Commision Cars (PCC)? Those were those great streamlined trolley cars of the 30s-50s in Canada,USA and Mexico! Found some old pholts showing inter-city using the NEC around the Baltimore area with pantographs rather then the usual trolley poles.Happy 2002 to one and all!

Dec-31-01, 11:24 AM (EST) 1. "RE: P.C.C. request!" Hi,Don't forget the Netherlands!!! The Hague had several series of PCC cars for long years.
And they ran in Belgium too.And the Czechian Tatra's were in fact PCC's too. At last they used the same technique.Dick van den Hoven Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-01-02, 01:15 PM (EST) 7. "RE: P.C.C. request!" In the USA, most cities used the 3'6" gauge, the Pacific Electric Line in So. California used a 4'8" track. PCC cars could be ordered also in tighter gauges. That was one of the great things about these cars, they could be fitted to do almost anything, at a modest cost and low operating expense. There a quite a few web sites around devoted to streetcars (trams).

Jan-02-02, 03:01 PM (EST) 11. "RE: P.C.C. request!" seaboard,The picture you posted is of the South Hill Junction station in Pittburgh Pa on the T just through the tunnel from Station Square. PAT Transit in Pittsburgh refurbished many of their PCC cars after rebuilding the network for new LRVs. Here is a link from Dave's Electric Railroads that have many pictures of the old and current system in Pittsburgh. Also, there are many pictures from around the country.Chris Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-01-02, 10:34 PM (EST) 9. "RE: P.C.C. request!" Absolutely!!! This is a car that would interest a lot of railfans and simfans. The PCC's all had a somewhat similar appearance but many differed in various details and configurations. To me, the nicest example of a PCC was represented by the air-electric PCC's which represented the earliest models used in the city of Toronto and which were used in Boston's trolley subway. The Boston units had center doors on both sides for subway use. The Toronto PCC's in cream and crimson with dual black strips around the belt rail were a knockout, colorwise. If you ever saw a railyard filled with a lineup of such PCC trolleys, you'd be hooked, line and sinker. So how about it guys, let's see a PCC real soon. The livery skinners will have a ball. Jan-02-02, 08:20 PM (EST) 16. "RE: P.C.C. request!" LAST EDITED ON Jan-02-02 AT 08:23 PM (EST)Actually every LARy car on the roster was 3'6" gauge. They had originally intended a cable car system at that gauge, but traction motors jumped up to the required horsepower before they had finished laying the trackage.
Check out the LARy section at: http://oerm.mus.ca.us/
They have 4 or 5 standard gauge PCC's out there, too. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Only Pacific Electric in Los Angeles had double ended standard
rail gauge, PCC cars. The LArys shown at what looks like Div.1
are 3.6 guage.& single ended.

Jan-03-02, 03:02 PM (EST) 18. "RE: P.C.C. request!" Mike, sorry, my error, not coming from the L.A. area I thought all the cars were 4"8" Pacific Electric in that photo. P.E. cars were the red ones. Have since found that L.A. had several car lines in the county area, some 3'6" and some standard gauge. In any event the PCC would be a neat addition to MSTS! No problem; I would like to see the whole Pacific Electric
route (all 4 divisions) & all of the rolling stock used throughout the years. Now there's a monumental project for someone. it's a route I would be willing to pay for.

Jan-02-02, 05:00 PM (EST) 14. "RE: P.C.C. request!" Something similar that would look great is the LRV's and ALRV's used by the TTC now, these replaced the PCC's in Toronto.Dave Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
