I can't explain why in english, my dictionary is lying somewhere in my house. (I'm german)
If you increase the power, the smoke gets more and more black.I think, if you have a helper, only the first one can increase and decrease the power. The second always has its power on idle.
That's %$§&*?!/$%& !Do you understand ?! My english is not very good !!Jens-Chris Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-30-01, 04:53 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Double headed steamers,,, question ,,,smoke??" I believe your explanation is incorrect in 2 counts.
1)If you manually hold the firebox door open, your lead smoke will turn gray as well because the fire is burning more efficiently.
2)If you do tests, the second engine has to be contributing. This is not perfect, in that the lead locomotive can't be a 10 watt machine and the second 5000 kilowatts, but if they are somewhat in the same range, they do share effort (pull).

Dec-30-01, 07:06 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Double headed steamers,,, question ,,,smoke??" Hi,somewhere in docs is stated that helper simply copies the heading loco (power etc.). It seems that there are some things which helper does not copy and these things are best visible in case of steam locos:1. Helper does not use sander.2. Helper does not indicate wheelslip.3. Helper probably always use automatic fireman which probably is not so good as You, if You have good knowledge of the particular route.4. MSTS does not deal with sand on rails, it does not *remember* that there is a sand dropped by the heading loco.I have found these things using Conn McCarthy USRA Heavy Mikado (mikado10.zip, mikado11.zip), Innsbruck - St. Anton default route (especially the section Landeck - St. Anton ).
Well, what to do?If You want to play the game, simply ignore the white smoke and enjoy... And stop reading here
If You intend to prepare a new (hard ) activity and if You want to add a bit of reality, You should do almost the same things as in real world:Steam locos were usually projected not only for certain purpose (passenger/freight etc.) but for certain type of route (mountains/flatland), too. Or even for a particular route. That means You should select a suitable loco first. Before beginning of regular service a new model was usually tested. These tests help to build up timetables, to standardize max. weight of trains for this loco, route and season, to verify that there are enough watercolumns and fuel points along the route (or to determine which of them to use), to prepare some special regulations etc. You can perform these tests in MSTS. Remember that sand may cause damage to rails and bearings, so avoid sanding if possible. And coupling and uncoupling helpers is time consumpting. And if You need a helper in MSTS, use any loco with antislip.

>2 steamers why is one
>smoking
>black smoke, and the other grey smoke?? That's because MSTS cheats with AI locomotives. It just moves them by using MaxForce parameter, totally ignoring the powerplant, whether it's a diesel or a boiler. So that's why all other locomotives other than the player have white smoke, and diesels run at idle. Dec-30-01, 06:33 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Double headed steamers,,, question ,,,smoke??" Hi guys. C.W. there's a problem with your post. steamers don't have antislip. I use 2 to 4 steamers on almost everything I do. I found that the selkirk is a great engine to use but it sucks as an AI because at 25% regulator the wheels slip and won't stop slipping till you move the regulator on your loco to 0% then the AI stops slipping. usually on your loco when you get wheel slippage you just lower the regulator and all is well. the smoke never changes because MS made the locos like the textures. a load of garbage. They work great for you but the AI has no brains, no knloedge of the limits of a train, thats why they can pull a 150 car heavy ass fully loaded coal train up the 5% standard MS marias pass route with one Dash 9 doing 45mph. not to mention they can run signals, have head on collisions, sneak up behind you by sneaking through reds at full speed and then ramming you from behind, etc. lets put it this way: the AI stands for Absent Intellegence. they cheat, lie, steal, break all the rules and finally they don't help with the work. they leave it in idle so you push/pull the load. though MS made it feel like they're pushing/pulling then why does it sound like there in idle?
