Dec-26-01, 11:14 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Working on an E-8A..." Do a search of posts from last several days using his name. Search under loco design forum. Just click on the little envelope at the top of any post to email the person who posted.
BTW, while your at it, would you mind releasing the engine without the winterization hatches. I understand they can be "transparencied"-out but it causes strange effects sometimes. Also, the 3000 poly limit sounds a little low. What exactly are you refering to? Most of us have reltively good computers that can handle more, and most of the locos out there do have more. Do you realize you can have more than one object under the MAIN frame? And each object can have up to 3000 polys per object (I've even heard 6000)? For instance the horn can be dragged into the MAIN frame as a separate object as well as the headlight, etc...-MAIN

Dec-26-01, 12:04 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Working on an E-8A..." Were there any E8/E9s without those "winterization" hatches? I can't recall ever seeing any and that includes even roads like Mopac and MKT, which certainly didn't have tough winters. I'm not sure those hatches were optional as even rebuilt E8/E9s retained them (Amtrak, Alaska)Regardless, that's one fine looking model and I can wait to have it. Congrats, Jens-Chris!One nice addition that I can think of would be the roof-mounted air tanks that Southern's E8s carried. They were very distinctive and I think Southern's E8 were some of the last Es operation for their original owner in the intended service.Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-26-01, 08:00 PM (EST) 15. "RE: Working on an E-8A..." Those Southern Crescent E's with tanks were the last to run in the Amtrack era - I was lucky enough to take a few trips before they retired to the barn - There's one on display just north of Atlanta............and I have pictures if needed.Great job - I hope someone skins the last passenger train to roll with those "double E's" (Actually they ran with three E units most of the time).Keep up the great work.Mark

Dec-26-01, 02:44 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Working on an E-8A..." Hi there !Now some details are added.BTW, I'm one of these guys, who use TS Modeler.
In TSM there are only the half count of polygons of the .s file.So that Loco has in TSM about 3000 Polys and in MSTS about 6500.Message Areas - "Working on an E-8A..." – image 5The "winterization hatches" seem to be "air hoses". Dec-26-01, 04:32 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Working on an E-8A..." I dont know about SF, but me and my dad just got 2 pairs of E8s, to run with our passenger trains, and I according to the models, their are 2 horns, facing dif directions, the conductor side has a horn facing forwards, and engineer facing backwards. I think, if I'm wrong please correct me. And this is REALLY GOOD, and I just wanted to suggest that. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I, being 17, have never seen an actual E8 only HO,etc. gauge ones. so this will be my first chance to not only "see" one "upclose" but to actually "drive" one.lol. keep up the excellent work. hope Chris Lee can handle her!! lol Craig Shortino Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-27-01, 03:41 AM (EST) 21. "RE: Working on an E-8A..." Hi !Excuse me, but I'm only 15 years old and from Germany.
I've never seen such locos in real. We have a model railroad "N", but no E-8's (yet) (daddy : "hint") I made them only from pics, which I downloaded from the I-net.
I don'T know about winterization hatches, in what direction horns are fixed, etc.
Most terms I don't know, so it's hard for me to understand what you mean with adding some "roof mounted air tanks".
Perhaps you can send me a pic and draw a arrow on it, that I can see what you mean.BTW, I needed 24 hours to make the highly detailed loco, which had 47000 (!) Polygons and MSTS wouldn't accept that. *grumble*
Then I needed 10 hours to de-detail, so that the loco got now 6500 Polygons. For the texturing I needed 2 hours.I had a Super Bogie !! With 3500 Polygons, it was really really good. It was structured like an real E-8 bogie.
I still have the part on my comp, if somebody wants it, contact me.What's the meaning of LMAO ??
I only know ROFL and LOL !I'm working on the B- Unit...Jens-Chris Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-26-01, 08:04 PM (EST) 16. "RE: Working on an E-8A..." Fantastic Job!! I'm also having the poly limit problem. I've built a loco and deleted all unseen polys so I'm now down to a total of 3500, however after conversion, TSM reports over 7200 and MSTS will not accept.I am strongly starting to support the idea MSTS is not capable of supporting a largely detailed loco. Mine now has "23" sub sections linked to main and it will only load if I delete large portions of the body to bring the final poly count under or around 6000. There goes the idea of having separate parts too. There's still a bit more detailing to go yet so I don't like my chances. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-26-01, 11:13 PM (EST) 18. "RE: Working on an E-8A..." I haven't had any problems with polygon limits? the E9 I did has got up to around 7-8 thousand polygons and imports fine into the game and runs. To bad you guys are having those problems, sorry to hear it, or read rather.Message Areas - "Working on an E-8A..." – image 10

Seeing examples like this is what made me buy TSM - excellent results can be achieved (with a lot of work!)BTW, how many hours would you have put into this one?
