Dec-24-01, 05:49 AM (EST) "Personalized .ace files?" I have done lots of skins for locomotives but was wondering how do you change the .ace files to work with personalized names.Example:
a gp38 ace file is "us2gp38col1.ace"
How could I change it to "gp381.ace" and still get it to work in the game?I know how to change the name using the makeace utility, but they never work. I know this question has probably been asked before, but I tried to search the forums and came up with nothing. Thanks a ton for any help.Happy Holidays

Dec-24-01, 09:26 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Personalized .ace files?" Nick,I don't think you can; I think the filenames are part of the original s file. I've had some success with this when rhe s file was not compiled and I could edit it, but to the best of my knowledge there's no way to decompile one. If you'd like I can send you an uncompiled one and you can see what I'm talking about.Nick Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-24-01, 10:13 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Personalized .ace files?" Yep, the name of the .ace file is referenced in the shape (.s) file. I have no idea how this can be changed, but I'm sure somebody here knows how to decompile an .s file.

Dec-24-01, 12:13 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Personalized .ace files?" This has been previously posted, but here it is again, for your benefit.Changing the texture (.ACE) file references in the shape (.S) file.Chances are that the .S file is compressed. Try opening it with Wordpad. If it's not readable, then it is compressed. You'll need to use FFEDIT to uncompress the .S file. FFEDIT is a command line program like MakeAce, there are some user-friendly versions in the file section, I think. As always, make a copy of your .S file before attempting this.If you're comfortable with the DOS command line here is the syntax:ffeditc_unicode CMPRSS.S /u /o:UNCMPRS.SCMPRSS.S = your original, compressed .S file
UCMPRS.S = new, uncompressed .S fileThis works if you're in the directory with FFEDIT. It's located in its own folder under Train Simulator\UTILS.With the file uncompressed you can now edit it in Wordpad.
Search for the original texture files names and change them.To re-compress:ffeditc_unicode UCMPRS.S /o:NEWCMPRS.SUCMPRS.S = uncompressed .S file
NEWCMPRS.S = new, compressed .S fileThese file names are examples you don't need to use them. This information has been posted before in these forums. You may want to search for that information, because that's where I got it from.Ken Martello

Dec-24-01, 01:29 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Personalized .ace files?" I have batch files for this. then I just change the name (Ctrl + X)to temp name written in that .bat, then edit the .s file and then recompress using another batch file. After this I just paste that original name to the new file.
It's very fast and easy with the batch files. You may even (un)compress many files at once.
I have renamed almost every repaint I have made, so I can put them to same directory. That makes the explorer work faster, don't know what it does to the game performance(probably nothing).Enocell Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
