Dec-23-01, 06:04 AM (EST) "TA's next steamers...how about a little quiz...?" Hi folks,
with the public release (WHEN, OH, WHEN?!?!?) of Trainartisan's USRA Light Mountain ahead, how about doing some guesswork as to what might be next on their list? To paraphrase a statement one of the TA people made on their own forum, they currently had actually two more U.S. steamers in the making...So, what would you say? My guess would be either a Northern 4-8-4, a Berkshire 2-8-4 or a big Pacific.
D.M.

Dec-23-01, 09:30 AM (EST) 1. "RE: TA's next steamers...how about a little quiz...?" LAST EDITED ON Dec-23-01 AT 09:31 AM (EST)I'd like to see my HO gauge Norfolk and Western 4-8-4 steamer. It looks similar to the ESE but it has fins on the tender. yup fins just like the classic cars. I love all those classics. Steamers, Diesels ( steamers more though ) cars, etc. If anyone here knows where to find NW engine pics please let me know so as I can find out what class she is. Its # is 608. That is the actual road number of this engine. I got it as a birthday present 7 years ago and to this day still don't know what class and loco it is. maybe they'll make a nice 0-4-0 tender switcher. I'd love to see one of those and not just tank ones. don't get me wrong though. I love the 0-4-0 tank engines but I have 12 0-4-0 switchers with tenders and would love to see one in MSTS. excellent choice for a post btw. please look for these puppies in the library while you wait for TA's new steamer. MSTS is getting in the holiday spirit as well.lol. Merry Christmas.

Dec-23-01, 10:29 AM (EST) 2. "RE: TA's next steamers...how about a little quiz...?" Berks would be great. Hefty, powerful and great looking. Especially fond of the Erie and Nickle Plate berkshires. Although, to be fair, since the Boston & Albany pioneered the design (NYC) and used it in Western Massachusetts, that should be the first one released. If I only knew about paintshoppro I could reskin them myself. Oh well!

Dec-23-01, 11:21 AM (EST) 4. "RE: TA's next steamers...how about a little quiz...?" Hi Guys. thanks for the info on the loco. that looks exactly like the one I have. only the #'s are different. isn't she a beauty? would love to see one in MSTS. jkcooney do you have tgatool2? if so use MS Paint like I do. thats how I painted those HESS engines and the Union Pacific 1880 coaches. only problem with MS Paint is there is no button to blend and smear the colors to make them look weathered. but MS Paint is very easy to use. it took me 4 hours to do both the HESS engines. and seeing as I've only been reskinning for 4 days thats not bad. and seeing as MS Paint is free with any windows it makes it all the better. Merry Christmas. don't forget your HESS christmas train. complete with the year as nubers like HESS does the year with the liscence plates of the trucks. they should be in the library today or tom. I uploaded them at 7:00 am but I don't know when the server puts them in. keeps your eyes peeled.

Dec-23-01, 01:55 PM (EST) 5. "RE: TA's next steamers...how about a little quiz...?" Hmmm.... A Berkshire or Northern would be nice, but my biggest hope would be for a big mallet like a Challenger or Big Boy. If anybody could pull off making one it would be the guys over at TA. An SP Daylight would be nice too.Grizzly Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I'm going to start on the 1940's mallet, big boy and challenger in about a week. if all goes well I'll have one done a week. so in 3 weeks you'll have all 3. but don't hold me to that yet as I have to fix this dang blasted coupler fix I started that is driving me NUTS!!!! hope I get it fixed by then Craig Shortino Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-23-01, 02:09 PM (EST) 7. "RE: TA's next steamers...how about a little quiz...?" You mean "a big articulated loco in general" . The Challenger and Big Boy were technically not Mallets, i.e. they had no compounds, and four high-pressure cylinders only. But apart from that, yeah, something like these would be great! How about this one (Virginian X-A)...this one IS actually a Mallet...
2-8-8-8-4, 6 cylinders (3 HP, 3 LP)...

Dec-23-01, 03:21 PM (EST) 8. "RE: TA's next steamers...how about a little quiz...?" How about these. these are 1940's mallet. little clarrification. I plan on doing a 40's mallet, a 40' big boy, and a 40's challenger. 3 seperate, in no way the same locomotives. sorry for the confusion. hope you like these pics of a '43 mallet.

Dec-25-01, 00:54 AM (EST) 10. "RE: TA's next steamers...how about a little quiz...?" Nah, We scrapped all the steamers and decided to focus on a new line of fantasy locomotives. Just Kidding! Sorry, I can't spill the beans but it will be worth having and waiting for. Face it, there's just so many cool locomotives to model. Picking is the hardest part.

Dec-25-01, 09:25 AM (EST) 12. "RE: TA's next steamers...how about a little quiz...?" That's most <Berkshire> true. I'm glad <Duplex> I don't have to worry <Cab-Forward> about matters as complicated <Allegheny> as this ...though I wish I <Northern> had both time and skill to <Jubilee> program some of <Jawn Henry> my favourite steamers and <Big Liz> electrics <Bi-Polar> myself...D.M.

Dec-25-01, 02:28 AM (EST) 11. "RE: TA's next steamers...how about a little quiz...?" Yeah, that's what she's been reduced to. It's nothing but a shame. At least she's not getting scrapped though. Can't wait until that Link museum opens. If I can get the day off I'll be there for the public opening.

Dec-25-01, 12:43 PM (EST) 13. "RE: TA's next steamers...how about a little quiz...?" HEY! quit callin' the 1218 a mallet!!! just kidding. Sacrelidge! But seriously, mallets are only articulated engines that re-use their steam from the rear cylinders to the front cylinders. The BigBoys, N&W A's, C&O Alleghany's are just plain old "Simple Articulateds." And if someone wants to model the 1218 Class A in MS TrainSim and incorrectly label it a mallet, I think I could live with that! Mike

The Y3 can be painted into other railroads. N&W sold many off in the 40's, 6 went to PRR, 8 to ATSF, 7 to Virginia, 19 to DRGW, and 5 to UP
I'd liked to see an N&W A class too. Big steam can't wait to see what you guys a TA are up too. Happy Rails Patrick

The number of roadnames that had them makes them a great value for the effort. And... if you put tack some air pumps on the front smokebox for an additional version you have a Y2, which will satisfy the Rio Grande guys!(check the 19 to DRGW, I think they got less 2-8-8-2's and they were Y-2's and more Z-1's 2-6-6-2's and K-3's 4-8-2's) That's 6 railroads for the price of one!D&RGW
