The second film was Disney's "The Great Locomotive Chase" filmed in 1957 starring Fess Parker. This film represents the most accurate
filmed account of the Andrews Raid. Baltimore & Ohio's #25 "William Mason" portrayed the "General" for this film.
Ok, here's what I know. In north east Ga, if you travel to the Cornelia area; you'll see a large depot off to your right, and a long sweeping wye (now cut) that heads down a long embankment. This is the only remaining trackage of the Tallulah Falls Railroad. This railroad, frought with problems from day one, and known jokingly as the Total Failure, was the railroad which Disney chose to shoot the movie on.Little known facts: Walt Disney so loved the TFRR that he tried to purchase it. But couldn't shell out the fifty thousand dollars in one lump sum that was requried. The depot that has wooden shingles had problems with the shingles. If you look closely in one scene; you can see a line where the shingles stop and asphalt shingles begin. The movie was filmed in its enterity on the railroad; categoring many of the famous 51 trestles, including the Wylie trestle. (A full hundred feet tall and made entirely of wood.)Most of the extras were locals who Walt felt would look good. In fact, the mayor of Tallulah even got into the act.Shooting was often done from the highway that paralleled the railroad. Made things loads easier on Walt. There's loads more...just ask if you want some...and one final parting fact.At the time it was used as a set, the railroad held two distinctions. One, it was the last user of steam in Georgia. (closed up shop in 61) and Two, it had the most trestles per milage for any railroad in the country. (51, spread out 0ver ashort 50 mile length). And, one rumor: Rumor has it that one of the locomotives running around disney land, may have originally been a TFRR locomotive, which Walt bought instead when he couldn't get the whole railroad.
