Dec-15-01, 11:40 AM (EST) "Low polygon double-stack container car" A number of people have voiced concerns over their frame rates when running intermodal trains so I've decided to temporarily halt the work on my high detail US container car and to make a low poly count car instead. It will not be an exact copy of a specific container car, instead it will be a general representation of a smooth side double stack well car of Gunderson type. So far I've made the well, 48 ft long, and the poly count for the entire well is 11 (as given by TSM). A 40 ft container is 6 polys, a 45/48/53 ft is 14 polys (because of the way the textures are applied). I've also made a European low poly container car. The total poly count of that one, including the container, is 230...

Dec-15-01, 03:29 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Low polygon double-stack container car" It's just under 200 polys (according to TSM) as it stands now.

Dec-15-01, 04:51 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Low polygon double-stack container car" It's not finished yet but it's still at some 500 polys. The problem with these cars is that you have to model the ladders and wheel etc at the ends since those parts are so clearly visible. Which costs polygons.

Dec-15-01, 07:17 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Low polygon double-stack container car" It has 560 polygons including the containers but excluding couplers (because I haven't made those yet). Almost finished. All that is left is fixing the couplers, shortening the platforms at the end of the car and finishing the textures.I intend to paint it in a number of different liveries such as TTX, UP, SP, Maersk and perhaps one or two more. The textures of the car are easy to repaint for those who wish to make their own versions of it.

Other wise that looks so cool.
Much better than the one that came with the game. I bet Microsoft sees how much better of a job they could have done on train simulator.
Thanks,

Dec-16-01, 02:06 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Low polygon double-stack container car" The high detail showpiece cars have been shelved (for the time being). Instead I thought I'd make some usable ones....Do you have any pictures of CP container cars?

Dec-16-01, 02:12 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Low polygon double-stack container car" Great looking cars! One thing you can do to cut down on polys is to (sparingly) use transparency to represent ladders and brake wheels. Another is to make different models with decreasing levels of detail for increasing distance. Also, when reporting poly counts you might go by what's in the .s file (the section of the shape file entitled "normals" quotes how many triangles are in the model)Clem
