Dec-06-01, 06:05 PM (EST) "Compressor sound in external view" It seems that compressor does not sound when in external view. I have sampled sounds of the steam driven compressor (the thing mounted usually at left or right side of the smokebox). When idling it produces typical slow *heartbeat*. I have modified both xxcab.sms and xxeng.sms. Cab.sms works well, compressor is working and/or idling, but only in the view 1 (cabview). No sound (working/idling) in external view, any loco... Is it my mistake, MSTS error or is there anything else? Any idea? Thanks, C.W. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-07-01, 01:45 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Compressor sound in external view" Hi,In both the .sms files in the sound folder, you will find blocks of sounds. Each block has this pair of lines:
Activation ( ExternalCam () Distance (1000) )
Deactivation ( CabCam () PassengerCam () Distance (1000) )
ExternalCam is the F2/F3 mode, PassengerCam the F5 mode, CabCam is F1.
So putting these "Cam"'s in the Activation line, activates the Sound in a specific mode, putting them in the Deactivation line, deactivates them. You will have to search for your sound and play with it and see if this will work.Dick van den Hoven Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-08-01, 11:32 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Compressor sound in external view" Thanks.
These values were correct, but there was something other wrong, because while in cabview I could hear compressor operating automatically and while in external view there was no sound.
The only two things I have made: correction of .sms filenames in .eng file (no " signs, no capitals) and complete restart of not only MSTS but the comp, too. Now the compressor is working in manual mode (key J to switch on/off), both in cab and external view. Psssss... back to building the loco...
By the way, do you know, what does Variable2 mean in steam engine files? The value seems to depend on both reverser and regulator setting so probably it could be used for volume control of chuffs...Nice driving.C.W. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-09-01, 06:21 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Compressor sound in external view" Your right about what variable2 is related to, but I don't know if there is a correct description for it. The relationship seems to mirror the settings for the regulator and cutoff set in the .eng file, but creates some non-linear/steps in values. You can use variable2 to control chuff volume, but the original MSTS .sms use volume fade-in/fade-out to cross-fade the two streams playing alternative chuff .wav files. So you have to loose the cross-fade if you want to gain chuff volume control. This makes the changes between .wav files much more obvious. Others have posted that variable2 can't be used because of some the erratic effects that occur with it's use, but I have successfully got over these issues for the SCOTSMAN. Dec-10-01, 07:29 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Compressor sound in external view" Yes, there are some problems with varible2. I made some tests using new stream with a loop containing only short beep with volume controlled by variable2. It seems that variable2 is something like (regulator/cutoff) or (regulator*cutoff) or so, because there were at least two volume (= variable2 value) peaks - at maximum setting of both regulator and cutoff and second somewhere in the middle, which could be achieved by two possible settings of regulator and cutoff.I will make further tests when enough time Putting all chuffs into one stream is another step (and problem). Maybe steam sound should be simulated differently from that of diesel.Btw. I think that sounds of all steam locos in MSTS are not as real as it gets especially when somebody uses often external views just like me. For example still standing loco in MSTS is very noisy, almost as in full run, and produces mainly one sound if we ommit the safety valve.
I intend to build several steam locos but now I'm doing so called research. For testing I use my favorite engine - USRA heavy Mikado by Conn McCarthy, Chris Lee and Julian Abram (Fozzy The Bear) - mikado11.zip with sound fix by Meeko Lewerk (Mikkox). It is a real work horse: try to haul 4.000 tons freight from Innsbruck to Landeck, then proceed with about 500 or more tons to St. Anton with sanding limited to 2 minutes or even with no sand.... This model with compressor at the left side bellow the main frame inspired me. There are some modiffications (probably I will upload them when they will be perfect enough) and findings:Changes:
eng.sms:1. Volume of x_fs_power_cruise_0 set down to 0.25 at 0 (less indifferent noise while still standing)2. Added two streams with compressor idle and compressor working. I have sampled real sounds but only that of one-cylinder compressor at the moment. But even that sound may add more reality...cab.sms:
1. Added one stream with compressor working. It seems that the total number of streams is limited to 15 in Scall. Gr. 5 so no compressor idle sound in cab view.Findings (steam loco mentioned, all sliders in sound setup fully to the right) :1. When game starts you can hear compressor for a while and never more in cab view and never in external view. But, on the other hand, there is no need to take care about air pressure with Compressor/Small ejector always open and the J key untouched...2. After first use of J key (Compressor/Small ejector On/Off) both sounds (compressor working/idle) will be played correctly whenever they should in both ext. and cab view (with respect to stream limit in cab view) but since that moment you must take care about air pressure forever, that means with very long train you should switch compressor on before releasing brakes to have enough pressure. And when finally standing at St. Anton platform you can enjoy *big fat cigar* watching your engine quietely breathing... Nice and almost real Well, back to the work (game) Now I'm searching for better compressor sound and for the new safety valve (probably the Pop-Coale) sound which I will need and which is very typical. But it is rather difficult to find and hear that because live historical steam engines are operated very carefully now
OK, nice driving.C.W. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
