Nov-30-01, 01:50 PM (EST) "Maximum number of lights?? - Hey Tim, lighting god!! - can this be done??" Hiya..
I'm wondering what the max number of lights that MSTS will handle on a loco. I'm toying with the idea of duplicating the CP
"Holiday Train" - This year CP and Ge have dedicated the train to the families of the firefighters, city police and Port Authority police who were killed 09/11.. Here's a pic of last years train..Message Areas - "Maximum number of lights?? - Hey Tim, lighting god!! - can this be done??" – image 1 CP Press release:
"Tens of thousands of Canadian and American CPR and General Electric employees were so profoundly touched by the brave response to the September 11 attacks that they have assembled a special Holiday Train adorned with 8,000 Christmas lights. The visually stunning train will be dedicated to the families of the firefighters, city police and Port Authority police who lost their lives that day. New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has been asked to officiate at a dedication ceremony to be held on December 5 at 5:30pm at the Fresh Pond Junction Rail Yard in Glendale, New York. Hand-made Canadian wreaths will be presented to city officials and departmental commissioners and Canadian Christmas trees will be presented to the families of each of the victims. Representing a gesture of unity, international cooperation, and the importance of caring for community and neighbors, the Holiday Train will depart New York on a 4,800 mile goodwill journey to raise awareness of issues related to hunger. The train will make four stops in upstate New York before it crosses the US/Canada border and continues its 14-day journey to the Pacific coast. Food and cash donations raised at each of the 75 community stops will be turned over to local area food banks"cheers

Nov-30-01, 05:45 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Maximum number of lights?? - Hey Tim, lighting god!! - can this be done??" Howdy, I already did one on an IC GP9. I lost lights after 250!!!! It is a LONG program to do them as well, but it was fun!! Look for the pics of it in the Livery and skinning section on the post Santa rides the IC!!I also do prototypical lighting for units. I love it!!

Nov-30-01, 05:51 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Maximum number of lights?? - Hey Tim, lighting god!! - can this be done??" A better way would be to make / modify a model with a set of strips for the lights with material selection solidbright then at night the lights would come on. and lights and colours would be on a skin map, could do the same then on the cars too.I waited an hour in the rain for last years train and it was worth it.john Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Yup I've been looking at that for a while now, and kept coming back to the same conclusion, it would be really neat to have in the game, but it would take a long time to do. So I've also left it for some other brave person. Cheers,

Dec-01-01, 11:38 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Maximum number of lights?? - Hey Tim, lighting god!! - can this be done??" Hello HAC,If you are referring to using the .eng file to create the lights, there seem to be some definite limitations. I originally used 47 lights on my BNSF 2098. Most of these were used to create the illusion of small reflections on things such as the hand railings and wheels. If I used more than 49 lights, most if not all lights in the sim (including signal lights) became disabled.Recently, I heard that people were having problems with the 47 lights in "2098". The problem occured in activities that had multiple locomotives. I cut the lights down to 20 in a modified release of the 2098's "eng" file. Hopefully, this will greatly reduce the occurance of problems.I guess the bottom line is that I don't think the "Christmas Locomotive" would work.

Dec-02-01, 03:41 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Maximum number of lights?? - Hey Tim, lighting god!! - can this be done??" As I mentioned, You can do it, BUT space the lights out far enough so you don't go over like 250. try a spacing of like .500 between lights. It took me 16 hours to do the one I did, but it was a learning experience, and Worth it!!You may have to make the headlights a "constant on", but it is a small price to pay!! You will still be able to switch on and off the light cones on the land objects!!Try it!!! You have nothing to fear!! Just back up your "original" .eng file.Any other questions I'd be glad to help!!Thanks!!

Dec-02-01, 07:16 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Maximum number of lights?? - Hey Tim, lighting god!! - can this be done??" Doesn't the TrainArtisan SD70 also have a number of light references symbolising reflections?
Guess the golden rule perhaps should be that until we can get someone to clarify the effects of this, one should not use more light references on locos than those the default locos have? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-02-01, 09:51 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Maximum number of lights?? - Hey Tim, lighting god!! - can this be done??" He he he. Personally, I'd imagine the crew of that train really prays that the lights aren't the type that goes out if one burns out. Imagine searching for it. What can I say, but you're a good man. I missed the X-Mass train this year, so this is as close as I will come to it.
As Tim says, I'm looking forward to a Jan release date. James. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
