Oct-13-01, 03:06 PM (EST) "Roll Call ... Train designers sign in." Ok Its Time to hear from all the train designers out there. What are you working on? put up a description and a screen shot of your current project. Lets have a little show and tell. My current project is a collection of Cars and two steam engines for the PO&N including 2 versions of a 2-6-0 Mogul #42 and #43 number 42 is an 1880's wood burner all dressed up #43 is a 1900 coal conversion with new cab and domes. To go with it will be some 1883 passenger coaches (50%) complete and a period flat car, box Car, and caboose. I hope to have it all ready to go by Nov 1 2001. I plan to include a couple of activities as well. Here are some shots of the two engines about 90% complete.Message Areas - "Roll Call ... Train designers sign in." – image 1

Those passenger cars are wonderful, and the bulldozer load, and wow, that caboose..best rolling stock I've seen for the Sim so far. I can't get over how real that looks, just the coupler alone is amazing.Me, I'm still pluggin away on my 2-8-0, getting a cabview made, but not very quickly. I'm also working on the SP Daylight GS4 with the rest of the BSP folks. I think John and Conn will have every steam locomotive made by the time I roll the old consol out of the shop doors That's all I'm currently working on, I have a thousand things planned, but I won't go into those, lol!Cliff Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-14-01, 01:52 PM (EST) 13. "RE: Roll Call ... Train designers sign in." LAST EDITED ON Oct-14-01 AT 01:53 PM (EST)Main Lines,That caboose is unbelievably beautiful. When will you be releasing it?It obviously has a lot of polys in it. Does this seem to impact performance? Or did you use a lot of tricks to achieve what you did without adding as many polys as it might appear?Any plans to make the windows transparent? I have been playing around with that and have had pretty realistic results.JuddMessage Areas - "Roll Call ... Train designers sign in." – image 7

Oct-15-01, 01:14 PM (EST) 25. "RE: Roll Call ... Train designers sign in." Thanks very much everyone for the comments. The polygon count for the model is fairly low - 531 for the body, 284 for each truck, and 116 for each coupler for a total of 1331. The coupler is the same one I have been using on my boxcars, but I have become better at texturing it. Everything is drawn to scale from plans and the textures are a combination of several prototype and HO scale model photos. In some cases the textures are black and white photos colored to match the rest of the model.I hope to be able to post it in about a week. Since this is my first non-boxcar, I still have to learn how to do translucent windows and add a passenger view.Larry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-17-01, 06:34 PM (EST) 32. "RE: Roll Call ... Train designers sign in." Although the initial shapes were drawn in Rhino3D most of the work was done in 3DCanvas Pro and could have all been done in Canvas. I think the trick is to create the model with a few simple shapes that are drawn as accurately as possible then create and carefully apply photographic textures that accurately match the underlying shapes. When the basic shapes are correct and the textures match, the eye is fooled into seeing detail that isn't really there. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Some even ended up in South America. The most famous one, of course, has to be Stepney, (one of Thomas's friends) which can now be found on the Bluebell Railway.Spent the whole evening just making the wheels, but wanted to try 3D spokes and everything this time.ian@trainsimfiles.comMessage Areas - "Roll Call ... Dec-06-01, 01:35 AM (EST) 34. "RE: Roll Call ... Train designers sign in." Don't know that I hardly qualify as a "Train Designer", but I thought I'd share what I am working on. I'm completely new at all of this. I downloaded TSM, Saturday and after making a water tower (whoopee),, I decided to head into the "deep end". After all, all that can happen is drown! I pulled out my plan book and started on the Pennsy 4-4-4-4. Really not sure what I'm doing, or how I'll get past the next step (I've felt that way each step of the way!) . . . or whether it'll ever run, but I'm having fun anyway!Message Areas - "Roll Call ...
