Sep-28-01, 12:13 PM (EST) "Shay controls (and a cab preview)" Does anyone have info on the controls of the Shay? Mainly about the reverser, I haven't found a pic of a Shay cab that would clearly show the reverser. Here is a preview of the cab so far... I've animated the regulator myself. The other controls are still Scotsman originals, placed here and there. Also, if anyone know what the two bars to the left of the reverser are, please tell me. The other is under the Scotsman cylinder cocks switch, only the top is visible. My guess is the sander and the cylinder cocks switch, but I'd like to be sure. If anyone has good pictures of the cab, please send them to me.

Sep-28-01, 12:43 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Shay controls (and a cab preview)" The tall bars next to the reverser are.......The Reverser! This is the top of the "Johnson Bar" style reversing lever. It is really the top of the bar and the release handle you are seeing. At the bottom, sitting front to back, there was a cogged arch that had a stop that pulled up when the handles were squeezed together. I'll try to find a picture of one and post it here, along with any good shots I have of shay cabs. I worked on and ran a 90 ton shay back in the early 70's at a logging museum, so am pretty familiar with them!Steve Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Here's a view of a johnson bar. The arched part has teeth about 1/4 square along its top side.Steve Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-28-01, 02:25 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Shay controls (and a cab preview)" Allright! Thanks, that solved the reverser issue. Now I can start animating it. On the pic you posted, it seems the brake stand is right of the Johnson bar?I have this pic, it shows the brake stand well. You wouldn't happen to know what the gold-coloured thing with 4 valves at the bottom is? All the Shay cab pics that I have include it.
Here is another pic of the cab, this time the "thing" being black. Is the dial up high on the wall the boiler pressure gauge?

Sep-28-01, 03:28 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Shay controls (and a cab preview)" The layout of items in the cab is different in my shot of the johnson bar, as it is a 1902 NP 10 wheeler! The gold thing is a hydrostatic luricator, feeding lubricant to the valve motion and other parts. It should be there, but won't do anything in the sim.Steve Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-28-01, 04:23 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Shay controls (and a cab preview)" LAST EDITED ON Sep-28-01 AT 04:26 PM (EST)Ok. How about the regulator, when you increase throttle, do you push it forward or pull it? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-28-01, 04:33 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Shay controls (and a cab preview)" You pull the throttle towards the back of the train to increase speed. The train brake, emergency is towards the window, release towards the center of the cab.I'm really looking forward to the shay!Steve Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-28-01, 06:14 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Shay controls (and a cab preview)" And remember that almost every American steamer had seperate engine brakes. I'd contact the author of the U25B's eng file for tips, since those engine brakes actually DO something. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-11-02, 07:15 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Shay controls (and a cab preview)" although it lookjs a little choppy i cant wait to see the completed version. generally shays were used for mining and hauling logs on mountain railroads such as the one owned by the Mower Lumber co. in the early 20th century. The Mower Line is still up and is operating under the name of Cass Senic railroad as a tourist line. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
