Apr-18-02, 01:42 PM (EST) "Next D Q" How does one download one of those big routes.
I am trying to get the Ohio Valley but it has 30some meg and my comp gets kicked off the line when we have maybe 20some.
And that took way more than an hour.
I tried a few evenings, wasting lots of hours.
So how can one get it?
Anybody have an idea?

Apr-18-02, 06:02 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Next D Q" Install Download Accelerator or any other download program that supports continuation. That way, if you get cut off, you can restart where you left off. Download Accellerator also increases your download speed by running several download processes simultaneously. With a modem, your speed will probably double. With DSL or broadband, an increase of 4x is not unusual.Message Areas - "Next D Q" – image 1

Apr-18-02, 06:54 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Next D Q" Cable Internet Access. The Telco's call me regularly wanting to sell me DSL. They try to sell me all the excuses for "not" (haha) using my cable modem.
I ask them why would I want a slower connection than I have.
BS answers spew forth. Pathetic; the DSL reps are programmed to hard-sell a dead and buried, out-technologied hook-up. Marketing folderol. SLOW. Don't bite.If you have cable tv, YOUR provider has the ability to sell you cable internet access. If they can't, trash them. And make sure your local newspapers are advised that the local cable provider is a bunch of slugs that can't provide you cable Internet access, Especially since they Have the technology. And complain very Loudly to everyone in earshot, especially your local Politicians.Shy of a T1 line at a corp., Cable Rules. Nothing else is even in the running. Nothing is even close to cable in your home.(Hell, Al Gore the pseudo-politician, he Invented the Internet, didn't he? Hahaha, do you really believe that?
Sad, more bs.)Cable: >>>>>>>Access site...Select download....downloaded. Done. Next site...And if you think/suggest I'm employed by a cable service/modem provider, I can assure you I am not! E-mail me and I'll reveal my employer.John Roth

Apr-18-02, 07:46 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Next D Q" I agree that cable is the way to go, if it's available in your area. With cable, you don't need accelerator software. Just click the "download" button and jump out of the way so you don't get run over by the incoming. I've found that the only thing limiting download speed via cable is if the sender's server is inadequate. If it's bogged down with heavy traffic, you can sometimes think you're back on a slow-as-death phone modem. Of course, if you're downloading on your slow-as-death phone modem from that bogged down server, you can go on vacation and check it when you return.Anthony Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-18-02, 07:57 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Next D Q" Thank you all.
Well, the idea crossed my mind. The one with cable access. But how often does one use it?
OK, so now I know how you guys do it.
Thank you all.
Hey Rich, how come you don't do home deliveries? lol.

Apr-19-02, 07:41 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Next D Q" I have done a few. I try real hard to keep it down though. Like anything else it takes up time to do them. I stay fairly busy with things like msts and work and general duties so adding sometimes even a little more takes away from improving the route or learning something else. Currently I'm trying to learn TSM so I can build my own buildings. It's coming along. Generally I think what someone should do if they are having problems downloading the files is first, try avsim.com. That's the most reliable server I've found. The only problem is you have to look for the route under msts scenery (beats me...). Or if you know someone in your area with a fast connection that's a big help. There's not much that can be done to reduce the file download size IMO. 31 of the 34 megs of the first file is taken up by nothing but tiles. Now, you will note that there are 167 world tiles but 250 tiles. It be great to strip off the unused tiles but it's hard to tell when you start stripping off tiles which ones can be seen and which ones can't (i.e. like through a gap in the mountain or something. It's something I am trying to work on though, stripping excess tiles.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-19-02, 02:49 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Next D Q" Well............. cable is great -- I have it myself. But you may still need DAP or something like that, since downloading from THIS site usually begets only around 25kb/sec with cable. That will take a few hours to get the entire seattle route, for example. DAP, on the other hand, is something I've been skittish about since installing it previously, before a wholesale reformat of the HD was done. DAP seems to carry out an enormous amount of internet activity unrelated to downloading, and that leads me to believe that it may be, or include, spyware. ZoneAlarm interdicts it, but it keeps trying constantly. Still and all, it does dramatically imrove speeds, especially here. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-18-02, 10:15 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Next D Q" Go back in the messages about three weeks and look for my post of exactly the same problem. The last suggestion of an alternate site was the answer. If I recall it was a Flite Sim Site!
Painless overnight download.

Apr-19-02, 03:06 PM (EST) 11. "RE: The challenge answered!" Well, I'll be danged...
Just thinking of you, Dave, wanting to do that, makes me feel sooooo good. But...
If I had just waited. Let me tell you all what happened:
Being kind of stingy, like wify thinks, she spends enough for the two of us anyway, I did not want to go the cable way. So I looked in the net for an accelorator, found one Naviscope, got it installed, went to avsim, thanks Rich, I was just joking with the home-delivery, I know all about time etc.
So this morning, Pacific time, I look at the mail, go to avsim, find Richard's route and start d/l.
Then I went out to buy me some plant, one has to have a hobby,
do tghis and that, come back and the comp is still d/ling.
OK, to make it short, even at noon Pacific, it d/led till it was done. At 4.6k. Usually 3 to 4. Must have taken 2 hrs.
So, David, thank you for the offer, but I beat you to it.
Do you have any other routes? Just kidding. I got now the one from Rich, the KHP, the switching one, that should keep me gouing.
Thaks to all, Ted. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-19-02, 03:19 PM (EST) 12. "RE: The challenge answered!" I will post anything I have to people who have problems. With things like the Alco Pa and Pb, I have done loads already, but they are relatively small files. While I am willing to pass on whole routes to people in the UK, free of charge, I would hope someone in the US would do a similar offer, as it becomes a bit expensive to send to the States. As regards broadband, I have been able to load down files of up to 100mg and more with no need of any additional help, all in a reasonable time.David Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-19-02, 03:54 PM (EST) 13. "RE: The challenge answered!" And no sooner than you have the route.. I'm working to drive you crazy!Message Areas - "Next D Q" – image 3 This is top secret code name: Project X. Note that there are three letters represented: x, y and z. Each represents an extension. None are all that extensive except for Z which I figure to be about 30 miles, maybe 35 to Wheeling WV. I've already started on X. With the completion of Build #8 (y'all have #7) this one will be dubbed Build #9. I've already added in the tiles (46) and completed the trackage up to where there is no DEMs. So guess what I gotta do next?Message Areas - "Next D Q" – image 4 (It'a an addiction for some people. Apr-19-02, 05:16 PM (EST) 14. "RE: The challenge answered!" You are a sad individual LOL! but stay that way, extend the orr all you want!Incidentally, I have been playing emrr all today, and it is still a great route, and also should be extended. There is plenty of room for putting more double track, and if you put up the speed limit to 50 It could be quite excitingAs it is, I am using activity changer to alter your stop times to something more reasonable, as you obviously dont play activities for real! Apr-20-02, 00:23 AM (EST) 15. "RE: The challenge answered!" Rich, Do you mean to say that the route I just got is outdated already?
No, you are just adding on. That is good. I can do it now. The downloads, I mean.
You just keep at it. If you feel the need to see the shrink, we understand. Will send you a card too. just let us know.
Take care.
