Apr-16-02, 00:49 AM (EDT) "Cabview Aliasing" Hi all,First off, I'd like to say hello to everyone, although I'm a casual MSTS user, I do like to come around and see what's new.I do have a question regarding aliasing cabviews in that instead of having a common cabview folder, I'd like to take the files and put the directly into the cabview folder of the locomotive for which they'll be used. How do you modify the .ENG file to recognize this? I believe this is in the line "CabView", but what do I put in the parenthisis? The stock Dash 9 and GP38 look like this:Cabview ( dash9.cvf ) or Cabview ( gp38.cvf )I want to add the F45 Cabview to an F45 loco, si I've put all the files in the loco's cab folder and edited the .ENG file to read Cabview ( F45.cvf ), but when the sim loads, I only get some dials and or gauges. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance,Santafewilly Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-16-02, 02:26 AM (EDT) 1. "RE: Cabview Aliasing" Hi Santafewilly, take a look at your .cvf file (p.e. F45.cvf). If you have placed ALL the files in your Cabview folder then all entries that address any .ace files have to contain simply the file name and no "path" entry is necessary.I assume, your cvf file looks something like this: CabViewFile ( "..\\..\\Common.cab\\F45\\F45_front.ace")or may be CabViewFile ( "../../Common.cab/F45/F45_front.ace")Both entries are equivalent, although I discovered resolution problems using the latter syntax a while ago when aliasing the default Dash 9 Cab.
You'll have to change the line to look this way: CabViewFile ( "F45_front.ace")You can also use: CabViewFile ( "..\\..\\F45\\Cabview\\F45_front.ace")where "F45" is assumed to be the name of your Loco's folder in "Trainset".These changes have to be made in each line that addresses an ace file. But there are still some "traps":Sometimes the Cabview Designers (many thanks for their great work) use default objects, for example: Graphic ( "..\\..\\Gp38\\Cabview\\NeedleBlack .ace" )Do not change those lines unless you also copied the file "NeedleBlack .ace" from the GP38 Cabview folder to your F45 Cabview folder !I hope, I could make clear what you have to do. If you still have problems, feel free to send me an e-mail.But remember one thing: Your intention of placing the complete cabview directly in the Loco's cabview folder needs a lot of space on your hard disk, if you want to use the same Cabview for several Locos with different skins. That's the initial idea of the "aliasing" technique, to save disk space !gerdpgerd.peter@q-l-f.de Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-16-02, 08:36 AM (EDT) 2. "RE: Cabview Aliasing" If you have the F45 cabview in the common cab folder/directory you can alias it like this and do away with the cabview folder in each engine. This has been tested by me and a couple of others using all different type of cabviews; NALW, Dekosoft, 3Dtrains, etc; and it does work. For example: I have aliased the Conrail EMD engines to the Dekosoft GP35 cab(note: this is payware, you can use the new NALW GP cab). Other than the engines that came with KHP and steam engines I have no sound or cabview folder inside of any eng folderthe cabview line in the eng file should look like this if you have the fp45 cab in the common cab:
"..\\..\\Common.cab\\F45\\f45.cvf"
you must have the " marks to make it work.If you need help let me know and I will see what I can do.Kevin Arceneaux Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-03-02, 06:41 AM (EDT) 3. "RE: Cabview Aliasing" Hi gerdp and kevarc,Thanks for responding to my post, sorry MY response was so late, my cable was down AND had some real world issues that needed tending to.I agree that cab aliasing saves disk space without question, but when I download anything for MSTS or for my other sims for that matter, I usaully do some tweaking and whatnot before adding it to the sim. I also make a back up and put it on a disk so therefore I prefer to have a complete stand alone piece of equipment that doesn't require any outside files. The exception to this would be in the case of any EMD hood loco's that use the stock GP38 cabview. In this way, if my system were to crash or the file were accidently delated, I can go back to my disk and copy the already "tweaked" file back onto my sytem.Again thank you both for answering my question.Respectfully, santafewilly

May-03-02, 09:02 AM (EDT) 4. "RE: Cabview Aliasing" Now these are the kind of posts I like to see, short; and straight to the point. I too gained knowledge from this post of only 3 replys; while a short time ago; I gained nothing from a post with 85 replys. I would also like to thank those of you who take the time to help others out! Ron K of Rockford Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
