Apr-13-02, 09:54 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Any serious narrow gaugers around here?" Hello
What's up? I'm a narrow minded kinda guy if you know what I mean. Living in Colorado, where the slim rails were once the rule of the day, and still live on in some places like Durango, how could I not be? Of particular interst to me is the Rio Grande Southern, its always been my favorite of the old narrow gauge lines. Even my favorite engine is narrow gauge: the Eureka, a classic wood burning narrow gauge 4-4-0.

Apr-14-02, 04:26 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Any serious narrow gaugers around here?" G'day Grizzly,That shot of the Eureka was absolutely superb, loved it. I'll prize that one for sure.
Got all those old type engines in MSTS they are nicely done, also those Durango coaches, nice.
Anyway great shot, loved it, er, er, any more...............?I have an old LP record by C.W. McCall (Black Bear Road) he sings a song called "THE SILVERTON", and that picture of yours says it all. McCall also sang the song "CONVOY" if your old enough to remember that one.
On back of the LP record cover, it says 1975 MGM Records INC.I worked on the Narrow Gauge 3' 6" on the Peterborough Division here in South Australia from 1963 till it was scrapped and torn up in 1970. I then worked the Standard Gauge 4' 8½", then the Broad Gauge 5' 3". Been interesting.... BUT my very best and most precious memories was while on THE NARROW GAUGE. Something about the Narrow Gauge that makes it tops. Partly because of the Beyer Garratts and "T" class steam engines and the old type rollingstock, something like in that picture. Now an old romantic with millions of memories in my now retired days.

Apr-15-02, 07:03 AM (EST) 9. "RE: Any serious narrow gaugers around here?" SERIOUS.As best I can tell there are only a handfull of us.If you are truely serious, tracks must be properly gauged. Which means at least for 3' gauge XTRacks. Glad I did it tbat way. Rolling stock nearly non existant but can be scaled down.Other gauges will need to the scaled. This is the fall freight last Oct. here in Eastern Oregon. Great proportions on these 3' gauge mikes. They also had the ex Uintah 2-6-6-2's here. This would be a neat operation in the sim, running over high mountains and in deep canyons.I'm standing in the dredge tailings from a major gold operation that required the tracks to be moved.Steve Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-15-02, 08:02 AM (EST) 11. "RE: Any serious narrow gaugers around here?" In regards to the Narrow Gauge question....the answer is a resounding "YES!". I like the Durango & Southern, but the one narrow gauge RR that I happen to like best is the one in Pennsylvania called: "The East Broad Top".
If you like Narrow Gauge RR's than I would recommend this web site to learn more about the "Good Ol' Eastie"
http://www.spikesys.com/EBT
I have been to the "East Broad Top" several times now and I am definitely hooked on this narrow gauge RR set in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania! Plus it is near the infamous "Horseshoe Curve". So, if you are interested in seeing the only surviving narrow gauge RR east of the Mississippi, then by all means visit the web site mentioned above and take a tour of the RR. It is so much better in person, but I like it and will be going back again this year.
For your information, the BEST time to visit is the first weekend in October. That is known as the "Fall Color Spectacular" and they run 4 steamers plus trolley rides both Satruday and Sunday. It is a lot of fun, plus they have a whistle salute at noon on Saturday and Sunday. (Definitely a "Must-Hear")
My goal for MSTS is to model the "East Broad Top". I don't know how long it will take me, but that is my goal. I have a ton of things to learn about CAD and things like that, but once I learn them, then I will begin trying my hand at re-creating the locomotives that are on the "EBT" right now.I hope that you and the rest of this forum will visit the "East Broad Top". It is an experience that you won't soon forget!I hear a lot about the C&T, and the D&S, but not very much is said about the "EBT RR" and I am hoping to change that. Long live the "East Broad Top"!-Tim Lewis Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-15-02, 08:30 AM (EST) 13. "RE: Any serious narrow gaugers around here?" LAST EDITED ON Apr-15-02 AT 08:34 AM (EST)Patrick, You can definitely count me in. I will also take the Liberty to mention that my fellow S.African, "Lewile" would also like to be in. He is busy with a Class 37 South African Loco.
We are living in South Africa where our Standard Gauge is 3' 6", Narrow Gauge for ohters. Our Narrow Gauge is 2' which is used in Kwa-Zulu Natal for Sugar cane and the other is in the Eastern Cape, Port Elizabeth area, where it transports Stone for the Cement Factory. The terrain in those areas are very mountainous, which needs very sharp curves.
Anyway, I'm all for your Narrow gauge..... 3' 6". I also look forward to "Fozzy's" K-36. What a fine looking Model.
I hope we'll be seeing a 3' 6" Route which is compatable with the present Routes in MSTS.?
From what I heard and read, Xtracks gives uncompatable errors or Render other Routes worthless??
Johan.

Apr-15-02, 12:12 PM (EST) 18. "RE: Any serious narrow gaugers around here?" Hmm..I'm not really a fan of narrow-gauge; my two fave steam locos are the Baldwin Pacific, and the Lt. Mountain...However, I would start thinking more about narrow-gauge if they came out with narrow-gauge diesels...Or have they?
Hauling cars is fun; but crashing them is even better.

Apr-16-02, 11:35 AM (EST) 24. "RE: Any serious narrow gaugers around here?" "Serious"? That's hard to say. I also like watching the big guys go rumbling by, but I'll never forget watching the daily runs to Silverton go chugging by when I was a wee lad living in Durango. They were still the D&RGW back then. We moved a bit south to New Mexico, and we used to watch the freight runs to Farmington go by every week (or less), until they pulled up the tracks in 1970 or so. My great-grandfather was the engineer on the final revenue run of the Chili Line from Alamosa to Santa Fe, so I've got a soft spot in my heart for that route as well, not to mention some good stories from my dad and grandparents about train rides up to the camping and fishing sites. That will be my next project. Right now I've been working on the Cumbres & Toltec route, using the standard MSTS track. OK, it's not 3', but I can run NG rolling stock behind Rio Grande Southern Moguls, along the canyon walls, around 75m bends, and up 4% grades. Hard to do anywhere else. I'm anxious to see the K-36 make that run.Once I get tired of tweaking and scenicking the C&TSRR, I'll pull back, get some route data for the Chili Line, take a deep breath, install XTracks, and see if I can get that route built in honest narrow guage. But that's a ways off.So I guess I'm somewhat serious, but I'm not too caught up in rosters, dates, and other details. I am grateful for those who have the patience to catalog that info, but I can't say I'm that serious about it.Andy Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-16-02, 11:58 AM (EST) 25. "RE: Any serious narrow gaugers around here?" As sad as it sounds, I've never seen a 'real' narrow gauge railroad. However, I have some good books and pictures from friends that have been on the White Pass, and have been close enough to the 'Newfie Bullett' relics inside and out with a mess of pictures for me. Something like MSTS I figure is such a great way for people to almost 'really' experience something, and I'd love to see what driving on a 3ft. wide track is like?
I was going to suggest to Maple Leaf Tracks that maybe a good future project for them, after such an amazing job with Kicking Horse Pass, would be to do the Newfie Bullett. Even toss in some 'wreckhouse' winds, if possible? But I see that MLT has gone 'state side' with their latest project of the Chessie in southeast. Hopefully in future, MLT or someone will do either White Pass or 'The Bullett' so I can experience the lore I've heard so much about of narrow gauge. Or maybe I should go to the Yukon for a real ride? (Unless one of you folks can help convince my boss for free time? ) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-17-02, 06:41 AM (EST) 30. "RE: Any serious narrow gaugers around here?" Very nice. I haven't looked into designing scenery objects, rolling stock, or locos. Route design has had a pretty steep learning curve, but I seem to be getting the hang of it - how much work has gone into these locos? Has it taken a lot of additional software? There's a few things I'd like to work on or see posted - a speeder (we used to call them "putt-putt cars"), the NG passenger cars, DRGW water tanks, etc.Andy Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-17-02, 07:50 AM (EST) 31. "RE: Any serious narrow gaugers around here?" Hey AndySo far, this loco has not been to bad as far as work goes, but
that comes from many months of working with 3D Canvas, and
modeling in MSTS. Someone whos never used a 3D modeller would
be hard pressed to say they're going to just walk in and build
a model like this, or any other steamer for that matter. But,
hey, thats how I started out, I just said "I'm going to do this".
I had spent many years modeling with Pov-Ray, and Moray programs
before MSTS was produced, so I still had a basic understanding
of the modeling end of things.Anyway, what you need to build models is:3D Canvas, TrainSim Modeler, or 3D Studio Max.One of the above 3 programs will work for building 3D models for
MSTS.I hope I have answered your questions....

Apr-17-02, 11:21 AM (EST) 32. "RE: Any serious narrow gaugers around here?" Patrick Very nice K27.
I would have to say that Im a serious narrow gauger. I volunteer at the 3ft gauge Pine Creek Railroad (New Jersey Museum of Transportation). We have a large variety of rolling stock that includes Quincy & Torch Lake outside frame 2-8-0 #6. Also we have Surry Sussex & Southampton 2-6-2 26, Ely Thomas shay 6 Cavan & Leitrim(Ireland) 4-4-0 3L and Chiriqui Land 2-6-0 46. The mogul is a 1908 Porter product and ran in Panama before being brought back to the states. Currently it is being rebuilt in our shops and should be operational this year to help celebrate our 50th aniversary. Any questions just email me at the address below.

Apr-17-02, 11:33 AM (EST) 33. "RE: Any serious narrow gaugers around here?" Thanks. That's good to know. I think the route building is much the same way - just dive in and see what happens. I was completely lost when I started, trying to figure out DEMs, markers, dynamic track, and all that. I look at the route now and see where I could make a lot of changes, and could have done it much more easily. Thanks again - one of these days I suspect my level of good sense will fall below the critical level and I'll jump into object design - "It seemed like a good idea at the time" - my usual excuse when my wife asks me What now?Andy Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-17-02, 05:40 PM (EST) 34. "RE: Any serious narrow gaugers around here?" Hey Patrick, Just a thought. When you realese the K-27 be sure that the 463 is included in C&TS scheme, that way we will have more of the C&TS when DRGWK36 gets it complete. Also my grandmother's father worked for a section crew out of Durango, and owned a mobile home park, and for a while during the 1950's the NOMAD was on display at the trailer park, She told me so, and I saw it in a complete history of the car, unfortunally the book went to a diffrent part of her family and it is hard tracking it.
