Apr-06-02, 09:58 AM (EST) "Sound - Bells and Whistles" I am particularly fond of Richard Cowens 2-10-0 and its bell and whistle. I have attempted to copy these sounds to other steam locomotives to no avail. Would someone please be good enough to tell me the correct method of copying these sounds. Your help will be most appreciated!

Apr-06-02, 11:32 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Sound - Bells and Whistles" Hi,The 2-10-0 comes with 4 files in the Sound folder:
R_bell_1.wav
r_whistle_2.wav
x_R_bell_1.wav
x_R_whistle_2.wavThe files starting with x_ are the files for the sound in external views. Now navigate to the folder of the Engine where you want to have these sounds and then to the Sound Subfolder. In this folder there are also 4 files with something as bell and whistle in it and of course 2 of them start with an x.
Now copy the 4 sound files of the 2-10-0 to this folder and rename them to the names you found there. But there is a great chance that you don't find any sound files in the Sound folder. In this case the sounds are aliased to another engine.
In this case, you will have to "dealias" the sound files for the bell and the horn.
I don't know if you trust yourself to edit .sms files, if you don't, I can do this job for you. Simply email me the .sms files, where you want to have these bell and whistle and I dealias them for you. dick@vdhoven.myweb.nlDealiasing:
Open the .sms file with wordpad and do a search for bell and then for whistle.
You will find a line that looks simular to this line:
../../Scotsman/Sound/fs_whistle.wav
Or
..\\..\\Scotsman\\Sound\\fs_whistle.wav
The second name and the wav file name can differs from this line.
Remove everything before the .wav file name.
So in my example remove: ../../Scotsman/Sound/
and you only have the wav file name fs_whistle.wavBut be carefull only this part of the line may be change, everything must be untouched.Dick van den Hoven

Apr-07-02, 02:11 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Sound - Bells and Whistles" Hi,I forgot something really important. When you dealias a sound file, you need to change the .wav file name in the sms file to the name of the 2-10-0 sound files.Another point is that fact that are also sound files aliased from the .eng file. In this case there are no sound files at all in the Sound folder and sometimes no Sound folder.
In an .eng file, there are two places where sound files are called from, they have parameter Sound(Soundfilename), this a sound file for the Eng (external) and one for the Cab (internal)
In this case, you need to create partly aliased sound files.Well, when the sound files are aliased from the .eng file, give me a mail which engine it is and where I can download it from, I can change the .eng file and create partly aliased sound files.
And my offer stands, when you let my know for which engines you want these bell and whistle, I can easily create sms files.Boy, it is difficult to describe things that you do instinctivily.
Sorry that I messed up this thread, but as I say I do this things with my right hand (Hey I'm lefthanded! ), but to describe it clearly is very difficult.
Besides the way of calling sound files is somewhat messed up, there are several ways to achieve the goal.So I point out here the ways that it can be done:
- Default MSTS: all .wav and .sms files in the Sound folder
- Aliased: .sms files in the Sound folder, calling .wav files somewhere else in a Sound folder of an other engine.
- Partly aliased: .sms files in the Sound folder and some .wav files in the Sound folder. The .sms files call .wav files somewhere else in a Sound folder of an other engine and call .wav files in the Sound folder
- Aliased from the .eng file: No files in the Sound folder and sometimes no Sound folder. The .eng file is calling two .sms files somewhere else in a Sound folder of an other engine.Dick van den Hoven
