Mar-27-02, 05:19 PM (EST) "Byte Mine -- Dan Gerous Curves??" Many years ago, I had an opportunity to view a video tour of one of the better model railroad layouts to be built in the last 50 years or so. I can't remember the name of the layout or the builder. However, I recall that much of the layout was based on a central theme of mining Bytes at the local Byte mine and transporting these bytes in specially designed secure cars to a byte processing facility. This facility transformed the raw bytes into words and other types of computer data which was transported to other locations.Another feature of this layout was a sharp curve located atop a steep cliff directly above a residential area. This curve was known as the Dan Gerous curve. You took it real slow on that curve or you found out where the name came from. Now that I have told you what I remember about this layout, does anyone know what is is/was called and who the builder is/was?Cal Rasmussen

No, sorry, I don't remember that one. But that mine...
'BYTE MINE'
is a classic play on words!
If the company expanded, would it be called 'Bite Mine 2' ?

Mar-27-02, 06:33 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Byte Mine -- Dan Gerous Curves??" Model Railroad hobbyists have always used puns for names. I have D. Kayed Dung's Fertilizer Factory, Fren Chore Perfume, Gonpher Caughie's Warehouse, St. Elmo's Fire Extinguishers, and Lee King Plumbing. My town names are Jellibelli, East Pharfetched and Minihattan (which is reached via Malfunction Junction). Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Although "malfunction junction" may be a fairly common MR name now, I think the layout I'm trying to identify also had a "Malfunction Junction" and may have been the original. Not sure on that. The reason I am trying to find info on that layout is to find all of the names and rolling stock that were used in support of the Byte Mine. Maybe if I look in the Walthers catalog I might find the video still in print.Cal Rasmussen

Mar-27-02, 06:55 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Byte Mine -- Dan Gerous Curves??" Sometimes you wonder if people even catch those little subtleties. The destination for the coal from the PO&N coal mine is the town of Newcastle, and the new Dam is in the town of Tinkers.
I never saw the Byte Mine thing, but in addition to the others mentioned I saw Lye Cheaton Steel Co., Kownter-Phitt Printers, or my two favorite Attorney-at-Law offices, Amble & Sechaser, or Dewey Cheatham & Howe. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
