Your route will look much better with a lighter palette, meaning that the colors are much too bright. In the west, everything is thoroughly bleached by the sun. Try lightening your colors and I believe you will be surprised how much better it will look. Looking foreward to seeing more screenshots of your work. I haven't been to Grand Canyon but I have been to Bryce and Zion up in Utah and my first thoughts when I saw your threads were "Wow how do you mesh and contrast the colors?" of the rock. Well your definately on the right track and it does look good Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-06-02, 11:10 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Fantasy Route - Grand Canyon Preview" Looks good. As far as lightening the colors, I say yes and no. I spent a week in Southern Utah about three years ago and was surprised to see that, in many areas, the colors are as you have represented. In the national parks (Bryce Canyon, Zion, Grand Canyon) I think the colors are lighter. If you drive around Kanab which is on the Utah-Arizona border between Bryce Canyon and Zion, you will see many hills and bluffs with very dark red coloring. There is an area just North of Bryce Canyon near the park entrance called Red Rock Canyon. The cliffs and bluffs there look very much as you have depicted. I say it's your route. Do what you want with it. Good luck and look forward to seeing it in the download area. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-06-02, 02:44 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Fantasy Route - Grand Canyon Preview" Tempest you have taken on quite a challenge and it looks like you are doing an excellent job. People are making suggestions about terrain colors, but as a route builder, I know that the selection of terrain colors other that the various greens is very limited. Looks like you used Sniper's redrock.ace and redsand.ace. I have used those and they provided a really nice effect, but at the same time, a real challenge since they can't be smoothly blended into another texture. That leaves sharp unrealistic changes in terrain color that works best if the terrain borders are masked in some way. To have all the colors you want, you may have to learn how to create your own custom terrain textures.Keep up the good work,Bill Burnett Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-06-02, 03:03 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Fantasy Route - Grand Canyon Preview" Thank you everyone for the kind words and advice to this route. Yes indeed Bill, those are the textures being used. I will be taking a trip to Canyon very soon and will get a much better feel for the terrain colorization of this route. I will also be creating some new textures for this route based on photos to be taken during my visit.
Once again, everyone's feedback is much appreciated!

Mar-06-02, 03:10 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Fantasy Route - Grand Canyon Preview" New terrain textures! I am always looking for new textures to create unique effects. Haven't figured out how to produce them myself. I would really appreciate it if you would be willing to share some with me for Sea View 2. Mar-07-02, 01:00 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Fantasy Route - Grand Canyon Preview" Yes, it is unprototypical! Lighten up! This is a fantasy route after all, and if the fantasy service contracted CSX to run in
the fantasy SW then, so be it!!!
