Mar-05-02, 04:52 PM (EST) "Sound for the Union Pacific steam locomotive" Can anybody help me how to put sound to my new downloaded union pacific steam locomotive?
Tried to make it work cutting and pasting from the flying scotsman, but doesn't work. Also tried with other sound folders from other steam locomotives.
Thank you very much. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-05-02, 06:24 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Sound for the Union Pacific steam locomotive" Are you referring to the UP Light Mountain locomotive? If so I can probably help you, since I'm the one who repainted it. Do you have the original Light Mountain package from TrainArtisan installed? It is required for the sound and cabview to work properly on the repainted locomotive. This is because it aliases the sound and cabview to the original Mountain locomotive. This is done to save you hard drive space, so you don't have repeat files everywhere. I think if you install the TA package, you won't have trouble. Another alternative is to use the Scotchman sounds (not very realistic, though) but in order to do this you will need to edit the .eng file. If you do indeed have TA Light Mountain installed, make sure that it is installed in the default folders. If not, that can also cause the alias to not work properly. Hope this helps. If not, feel free to e-mail me and we'll go from there.Grizzly

Mar-06-02, 02:57 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Sound for the Union Pacific steam locomotive" Hi Grizzly,
Maybe you're the one that can definitely help me.
I'm pretty new to MSTS, so that will explain my first problems with this incredible sim.
What I did is downloading upmount.zip (cause looked sooooo nice), then unzipped the file and placed the ta_mount_up folder directly in the Trainset subfolder of the Trains folder. Then went to the activity editor and made the steps needed to make it appear on MSTS. It did appear, but no sound and no cab view.
Please tell me what to do step by step. I really love the design and the painting of this locomotive. You've done an incredible work on it.
Sincerely yours,

> Also tried with other sound folders from other steam locomotives. There are a couple of ways.
First you say you copied the Flying Scotsman sound folder (I presume) into your UP steamer folder.
First make a backup of the UPs.eng file just in case you mess it up. You will be okay do not let this put you off.If you have or want to use the scotsman's engine sound, then you need to open your UP steamer's .eng file with WORDpad (NOT Notepad) and scroll down till you find the line SOUND.
OR... once the .eng file is open, click EDIT, then FIND and a Find box appears.
Type in SOUND. (does not have to be uppercase in the FIND box, I only did that to highlight it)
Click OK and it will go to a line that should read:- Sound ( "FScotEng.sms" )
Change the line to read exactly this.
Then on the find box again click:- FIND NEXT, till you see another line further down:- Sound ("FScotCab.sms" ) Change yours to this as well. Click SAVE and close WORDpad. Now open your Tender.wag file with WORDpad again using EDIT / FIND, type in SOUND.
This should find the line:- Sound ( "FSWagT.sms" ) change yours to reflect this as well.
Again SAVE and close Wordpad.Your engine should start-up with the Flying Scotsman Sound.
If you use another engine for sound, look in that particular Sound folder for the ***Eng.sms and ***Cab.sms files (engine) and also the ***wagT.sms (tender) they must appear in the steamer's .eng and .wag file.
++++++++++++++++++Another way is have nothing in the sound folder at all.
In the UP steamer's .eng file you edit and type a path to the Steamer's sound folder that you wish to use and using its ***Eng.sms, ***Cab.sms and ***wagt.sms files.
The line in the .eng file should look like this below.
For example if you were setting a path to the Scotsman sound folder.
Remember the tender .wag file must be done as well.
With Diesels only the .eng file needs to be done.Example of setting a path exactly like this.
UP .ENG fileSound ( "..\\..\\scotsman\\Sound\\fscoteng.sms" )
Sound ( "..\\..\\scotsman\\Sound\\fscotcab.sms" )UP .wag file
Sound ( "..\\..\\scotsman\\Sound\\fswagT.sms" )Doing it this way you save heaps of hard drive space, but what I do is I still make a folder called SOUND and all that is in it is a TXT file to the effect of what engine sound is connected to this engine. (future reference) Of course the drawback of this, IF you delete the engine that this engine's sound is coupled to, well er sorry no sound for your engine. We cannot have our cake and eat it too. Weigh up which is best for you. Think about which way you would feel comfortable with first. You probably would never delete the Scotsman as it's a default engine so using a path to the Scotsman's sound would be okay, well till you get the feel of things.Hope I got it right and I've helped, and made it plain enough for you to understand. I know what it was like when I first learnt to do it. That seems like 10 years ago now. Grey hairs everywhere

You've done a very very hard job helping me this way. It's very difficult for me to make it the way you tell me because I'm not familiarized on editing files with wordpad, but be sure I'll take a lot of patience on reaching my objective. So many thanks again, John.
Sincerely yours,
