Feb-12-02, 09:46 PM (EST) "Quartered Drivers" The drivers on the Mikado and Pacific are not Quartered, why? If you look closely thru the drive wheels, you will see the connecting rods are top dead center at the same time. This is not correct for a North American Steam Locomotive. When one side of the engine drivers is at top dead center, the other side should be off by 90 degrees.Rich S. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Quartered Drivers" I think they do it for modeling purposes, they just mirror one side to the other to save time, and the textures are mirrored also, but i dont know if that has anything to do with it. Its just a lot eaiser to do it the way they are.Trevor Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-12-02, 11:37 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Quartered Drivers" Wow a blast from the past. Yes the drivers are not 90 deg out from each other. The reason? It requires twice the number of animated parts, and in most instances you can't see one driver set while looking at the other. So to date even though its not 100% correct its the way its been done. I thought about doing it for the ten wheeler because of the lessor number of rods with slide valve gear but in the end practicallity won out. There is quite a discussion of this topic way back in the Loco design threads from July or August, it had some good comments in it.john Fowlis Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
