Feb-09-02, 02:30 AM (EST) "The Olympics are about TRAINS too." I thought I would share some photos of the "other" athletes of the Olympic Games. These shots were taken in Salt Lake City on my last visit home. Union Pacific built a temporary rail village where they are parking all the cars used on the Olympic torch relay and some Canadian Pacific passenger cars. If my source is correct, the CP cars are being used for Olympic Athletes and the UP cars are for special people related to the company. BTW I was being watched by a security gaurd as I shot these.

special track with plastic to hold power cables. The rest of the torch train was pulled up here later in the afternoon.

In Heber, about an hour from Salt Lake, there is a big steam event planned during the Olympics. The Nevada Northern sent its steam engine and two passenger cars to help take people to the cross country event at Soldier Hollow. The photo below shows the Heber Valley Railroad's steam engine passing the two Nevada Northern coaches unfortunately the NNRR's steam engine was inside the shop when I was there.

Isn't it a shame that a railfan must now "sneak" these kinds of pleasures that were once enjoyed freely by generations without the present threats we now endure. During the opening ceremony they recreated the laying of the Golden Spike, certainly one of the most important highlights of early American History. Thanks for the memories.Lance
