Feb-08-02, 08:06 PM (EST) "Can't uncouple cars" If it's not one thing it's another. First the front coupler doesn't work. Then the patch to fix the front coupler causes lockups. All that is fixed but now I can't uncouple cars if I'm using the front coupler. I'm not just talking about the car attached to the front coupler, but anywhere in the cut. I come to a stop, uncouple the cars (they go away in the F9 window), and when I start pulling away they're coupled again. I've tried setting the handbrakes on the uncoupled cars and uncoupling while I'm already moving away, but none of that works. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-09-02, 06:30 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Can't uncouple cars" MSTS does uncouple only in forward sense!Try this: uncouple by double-clicking, then move your loco very slowly (< 1 km/h) away for 50 cm. This should work. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-09-02, 02:33 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Can't uncouple cars" I've always had sporadic sucess with uncoupling the front coupler, even before the patch. One thing that worked most of the time was to set the handbrake on one of the cars, then back away slowly while clicking on the coupler. Took quite a bit of finesse to keep it from re-coupling, and even then I sometimes had to click on it 5 or 6 times to convince it I didn't want to drag those cars anymore. Applying 20% independent brake (loco brake, not train brake) and backing away in notch 1 while slowly releasing the independent brake gives pretty good fine control.
What I'm experimenting with now that seems to work pretty good is to stop the train where I want to spot it, and release the brakes. Then;
1. Reverser to forward, throttle to notch 1, get it rolling slowly (and I mean SLOWLY, 0.1mph!)forward, throttle off.
2. Doubleclick on coupler.
3. Reverser to reverse, throttle to notch 1. Wait for results, don't go jamming the throttle up when the engine doesn't start backing up right away. This seems to work pretty good on level track, obviously it wouldn't work going uphill, but every time I've tried it that way so far it uncouples on the first try. Having said that, I've now put the whammy on it in spite of knocking on wood with one hand while typing with the other, so it's probably not gonna work next time I try it!
