Feb-08-02, 03:30 AM (EST) "I've had it with errors, bugs, glitches, etc" I bought the Tehachapi Pass route last month. Since then i've steadily been adding objects, cars, stations, buildings, roads and so on. The default detail level for the road sections they used is 7. Here's my problem= I decided to use 5 as the detail level for everything I placed, so I had to change every existing road piece there was. Last night the R.E. crashed 3 times because of me placing too many things in one area. I didn't realize it, but when I reinstalled MSTS, every road section I converted to level 5 went back to 7. What threw me off was everything else I placed was still there in the game. Could someone tell me a quick and painless fix for my problem? I've had it!! Thank You in advance. Feb-08-02, 10:48 AM (EST) 1. "RE: I've had it with errors, bugs, glitches, etc" I'm happy to say that not all the roads were gone. Just the ones in the section that had too many objects. Will the car spawner,if it's placed wrong, wreck roads? That might be the whole problem. Thanx again Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-08-02, 11:01 AM (EST) 2. "RE: I've had it with errors, bugs, glitches, etc" You have been told in this thead:http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/3514.htmlthat you *must* get more RAM. You will continue to have problems until you do, and all the asking for help won't help, because you do not have enough RAM. And posting your question in another forum also won't help. The problem is the inadequate amount of RAM..

Feb-08-02, 11:05 AM (EST) 3. "RE: I've had it with errors, bugs, glitches, etc" WP713Check the world tile where you are adding stuff. If it's size is above 700k, then it will crash the RE. Now what I see is the world file at 1k and the backup of the file at 600k or so. You may have placed to many objects.I don't think it is a RAM issue. Although more RAM will increase the time between needing to shut down RE and restart.David Klemm

Feb-08-02, 01:24 PM (EST) 4. "RE: I've had it with errors, bugs, glitches, etc" Thank you David, for a calm response. I've narrowed it down to the car spawner corrupting my roads. I don't know how, but every section that was connected to the one I put the spawner in got eaten. I currently have 256k memory, and I know that's hardly enough. But bashing my question/problem is hardly the answer either. Not once have I ever bad mouthed or jumped down someones throat because I thought I knew it all. Some of the questions posted at this web site are far more simple than this. Why don't you go tell someone who can't get a CVF. to work how dumb they are for asking? Feb-08-02, 03:09 PM (EST) 5. "RE: I've had it with errors, bugs, glitches, etc" First, my response was calm. It was couched in non-offensive language. There was no chest beating, no cussing, no swearing. It was factual and true.Whereas David is correct in that there appears to be a 700Kb limit to each World file, I am not sure if those numbers were arrived at with low RAM or adequate. Until that is determined, I will still maintain that your problems *could* stem, even partly, even 1%, to the inadequate RAM that you have. Therefore, my response was not "bashing," it was a statement of fact. And until you increase the RAM, any and all problems that you have with the Route Editor will be suspect. That, too, is not bashing, that is fact.I also did not bad mouth or jump down your throat. In fact, I would like you to point to where I badmouthed you, exactly what words would you consider as badmouthing. I stated fact. If you do not increase your RAM, you *will* have problems, and no amount of posting questions in different forums will solve that problem. Further, I do not think I know it all and I resent your characterization of that fact. On the point of the amount of RAM, what I know comes from fact, comes from experience, and comes from other people who have had the same experiences. You state, "Not once have I ever bad mouthed or jumped down someones throat." Well, chief, you just did!I don't know how to say this any plainer--you will continue to have problems with the Route Editor if you don't get more RAM. If you are going to create routes, you *must* consider more RAM as a necessary tool. I realize that for some $30-50 for 256MB RAM is considered a lot of money, but the fact remains, you will have problems. You can't do the job without adequate tools. Lastly, your last sentence makes no sense at all. "Why don't you go tell someone who can't get a CVF. to work how dumb they are for asking?" What does having a CVF (what is that anyway?) have to do with asking....asking what?.

Feb-08-02, 10:06 PM (EST) 7. "RE: I've had it with errors, bugs, glitches, etc" As a totally unbiased, uninvolved third party I beg to differ with sir. Your reply was less than calm. Let's analyze it."You have been told in this thead"This sounds like my mother many years ago has she began to scold me."that you *must* get more RAM."Your are telling him he "MUST" do something? Who died and made you boss!"You will continue to have problems until you do, and all the asking for help won't help, because you do not have enough RAM."Oh yeah, that sounds very calm, not a bit of sarcasm there boy, no siree bob, not one bit of sarcasm. In fact, a very delightful sentence. Sure warms me up to you!"And posting your question in another forum also won't help."Now you sound like me talking to my 12 year old."The problem is the inadequate amount of RAM."This is the third time you repeated that. Let me make sure I understand what you're saying. Are you saying you think he needs more RAM? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-08-02, 11:57 PM (EST) 8. "RE: I've had it with errors, bugs, glitches, etc" I have 128 meg of ram on win98 and seem to have less problems than many, have never encountered an insurmountable ram problem, and can run 4-8 hours in a session depending on what I'm doing.1) I turn off thumbnails in the object browser-it leaks memory bad.
2) I don't do massive terrain adjustments - its unnecessary when using DEM's, and if my dem isn't right I just re-write DEMEX until it is. I can piddle around in all the stock routes for quite some time without problem, so I really don't think ram is the WHOLE problem here..... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I don't.But if you look at my message posted in this thread just before this one, you will see that RAM *appears* to be a very deciding factor. Therefore, my original comments were NOT out of line. In fact, by all appearance, they will fix the problem..

>Your are telling him he "MUST"
>do something? Who died
>and made you boss! What a humorous response.Yesterday, we had our hot water heater looked at, as it was having problems. The plumber said, "You must get a new hot water heater."And so I responded this way, "Who died and made you boss"?What humor.Would you have been happier if I had of said, "Well, you see, uhmm, it's, uhmm, like this, you may want to consider, or at least pass it through your brain cells, well since I don't want to offend, maybe I was too strong by saying 'you may want,' well, you need...no need is also too strong, after all, no one died and made me boss, hmmm, what shall I say, Oh, I know, the answer to your problem...not that, too, is to dogmatic, well to tell you the truth, since anything I say will offend, I guess I can't tell you how to fix the problem."Now, that would certainly be a better answer, wouldn't it?"Who died and made you boss! (sic)"That's a good one. Thanks for the chuckle.Oh, consider this sentence, "Ok, what you need to know is which button to click on." It was by WP713. In this thread:http://www.train-sim.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=2461&forum=DCForumID6&archive=yes"need to know"? Feb-09-02, 12:24 PM (EST) 20. "RE: I've had it with errors, bugs, glitches, etc" I don't think that the size limit is 700kb. I uncompressed the biggest Marias pass tile, and it was 1107850 bytes(1,05 Megabytes!) I once edited these compressed tiles, but RE saved them uncompressed.
I wonder how they got those files this big?Enocell Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-09-02, 00:11 AM (EST) 9. "RE: I've had it with errors, bugs, glitches, etc" I would like you to read a post that is in the archives. It can be found at:http://www.train-sim.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=1155&forum=DCForumID6&archive=yesSpecifically, read responses 1 and 2 to the question.Response 1, the person writing had the sim months before it was released. At the time of this post, he had built over 150 routes. The equipment he is using is incredible, he is a programmer, and he has lots of everything--including RAM. And he has never found any limit to the size of the world file. In fact, he writes, "Awhile back you ran into a tile object limitation. I've been doing some limits testing lately and haven't hit any limit yet."Now note Response 2. The person here as 256 MB RAM and he gets crashes when the world file reaches 600-700 KB.Notice the difference between the two. Notice how *apparently* RAM *is* a factor in crashing because of too many items in the world file. Therefore, I still maintain, buy some more RAM..

"RE: I've had it with errors, bugs, glitches, etc" LAST EDITED ON Feb-09-02 AT 08:04 AM (EST)>Therefore, I still maintain, buy some more RAM.It may be easier (and more cost-effective) to check and tweak virtual memory settings first...Also, iirc the person you are referring to has been running MSTS on winXP. If the original poster is using win98 or Me, this may also explain why he's getting more crashes -- NT/2k/XP is generally more efficient when it comes to memory management. Feb-09-02, 11:09 AM (EST) 16. "RE: I've had it with errors, bugs, glitches, etc" LAST EDITED ON Feb-09-02 AT 11:11 AM (EST)Thanks for your kind response. If you read the history of this thread, and the thread to which I point, you will see that the person to whom I responded has asked similar questions and has received the same answer. And instead of doing what must be done, he continues to have problems and asks for help.Help has been given a number of times. This would be like one who wants to create shapes (locomotives, scenery) and asks for help and is told that in order to do that, the person must get some 3d software, which he refuses to do, but continues to ask for help. There will be a time when plain speaking needs to occur.Hmmm. One post and you can be an objective third-party observer?Hmmm. 1260 posts. Didn't know I had that many. I have been here from near the beginning--when MSTS was released. I have provided lots of information, at times taking literally hours of my personal time to answer one question. I have developed procedures to make route building easier--procedures that if you follow are guaranteed to produce positive results. When I provide answers, it is based on many hours of work, that is, personal experience, and experiences of others. Therefore, when someone continues to ask a question but refuses to follow the answer, yes, my personality doesn't "interface well with others." But, I would guess, yours wouldn't either. Again thanks for the input..

It couldn't have been because of what the others are saying right? I'm sorry if I repeat myself here in the forums, but my original post wasn't about the same subject which brought up RAM. I just wanted to know why the car spawner made the roads dissapear.
