Feb-05-02, 01:28 PM (EST) "Train-Sim transfer speed" I am using cable and most sites I get from 150kb per sec to as high as 300kb per sec. True some sites I get much lower but months ago I always use to get aroung 80kb to 120kb per sec transfer rates on Train-sim.com and on their flight sim board I continue to get 80kb to over 120kb per sec.Well recently since Train-sim moved servers I now usally get from 30kb to 50kb and much of the time aroung 15kb to 25kb per sec. I am one of those that comes home and at the same time every day I access the site and download that days new files so my comparision should be pretty good since I have been doing it for months at about the same time of the day.To the point that some of the larger files, mostly route files I try to find somewhere else to download it. Case in point, I was going to get the Cow Creek route which is around 50meg in size and it was transfering at aound 10kb per sec so I aborted. Now I know even 10kb per sec is faster that a 56k transfer and I am not trying to rub that into anybodies face. It is just that since I am lucky enough to have cable I sure which I could get the rates from their site that I use to.Thanks for listening to my crying......Promise wont do it again Don

Feb-05-02, 03:24 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Train-Sim transfer speed" Just to let you know, you are not alone in your situation. I am a cable modem user as well and get similar numbers to what you posted. My DL speed starts off fast and then dwindles down. I don't have the answer, I'm just letting you know that it's not an isolated event. Kyle Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-05-02, 03:39 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Train-Sim transfer speed" I use cable too, I am quite content with download speed compared with 56k. You should realise that us guys with cable reduce what is available to the telephone line users, because we hog bandwidth. Perhaps we are real hoggers, LOL!Personally, I try to download when it is fairly quiet, ie USA nightime, partly for me, and partly for the telephone line users.
I remember the pain of trying to download at 56k, and not many can afford or have cable available.Lets be fair to the little guy.David Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-14-02, 08:56 PM (EST) 15. "RE: Train-Sim transfer speed" I have 1.5M DSL and can't get files here either at any speeds that are decent. They start low and go lower in speed so I usually abort. Looks like they have a problem here. <Bob> Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-05-02, 06:42 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Train-Sim transfer speed" I thought that this was a problem with mt computer. So glad to see this thread. I have DSL and usually go around 55 - 60 kbs, but train-sim slows to 4 - 6 kbs most of the time now. What gives? It is snail slow to get anything. I have even thought of using my dial up modum to see if it is any faster with the dl. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-05-02, 07:56 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Train-Sim transfer speed" Me too on the starts fast and runs out of gas fast D/L...
I too have a cable modem and get over 50kB at FlightSim and over 100kB at Microsoft.... Something is not quite right with the new server and so far at least Nels has not replied to us.... I'm guessing he either can't fix it or is still working on it.... The good news is that while before I could only get 2 simultaneous download from Train-Sim now there appears to be now limit and they all run at that 6kB rate.... Wonder if their is a throttle in there somewhere....
Had 6 of them going last night at once all at the same speed....------Chuck Schneider---------

Feb-06-02, 03:57 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Train-Sim transfer speed" Hi, I am a 56k modem user and since I got this new computer the connection has dropped from about 44 000 to about 37 000!! My downloads normally start off at a rate of 5/6kb and usually end up at about 2/3kb!!!! I have never downloaded a new route as it will just take to long. I havent been downloading from this site for long, about a month or - so. When did they switch srevers?Phil Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-06-02, 05:12 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Train-Sim transfer speed" I also experience slow downoads here with my cable modem. It often drops down tothe low 20's.As a comparison though,When I downloaded the patch from MS for the sim,it peaked out at 677kb/sec!Hopefully speeds will increase, but I can guarantee Nels that I'm not going anywhere.I was with this site from the very beginning and it's still a favorite.Keep up the good work Nels. Feb-06-02, 06:48 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Train-Sim transfer speed" LAST EDITED ON Feb-06-02 AT 06:56 PM (EST)I do hope that Nels will let us know something soon. When I DL'ed the MSTS patch I was getting right at 60 k/sec with my DSL line. Getting stuff from here at 4 -5 k/sec is getting right trying, especially thoes large route files. It is no help that you can now DL 6 files at 5 k/sec at the same time.I just tried to get a few files from the files section and the speeds are up to the midteens now for me. Much better then 5. Hopefully Nels or the server co. are working out this snag. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-07-02, 02:06 AM (EST) 12. "RE: Train-Sim transfer speed" LAST EDITED ON Feb-07-02 AT 02:08 AM (EST)Just thought I'd add my $0.02 worth. Using cable modem, I usually start at over 100kbps and it gradually slows down to under 10. Glad to know its not my 'puter or ISP, but its still kinda aggravating. Feb-14-02, 08:56 PM (EST) 14. "RE: Train-Sim transfer speed" Cable modem service for me, new as of last Thursday. I get download speeds up to 200 on other servers, though 150 to 160 is a fair average.Doesn't seem to matter what time I download from Train-Sim - I get 60 speed. Not that I'm complaining, the best I got from a dialup was 5.6. But it is kinda slow compared to others, there is also the fact that the new server does not support interrupted downloads - with GetRight it doesn't anyway. I ran a test with a S. American server and Train-Sim. I interrupted and successfully resumed a 2.5 Meg file from Brazil 18 times. Not once would Train-Sim resume download if the timeout was more than a few seconds. Absolutely not if the connection was closed and computer rebooted. This makes it very difficult for dialup users to download the really big route files. I had years and years of lsuggish and unreliable service, so I can sympathize with those who are forced to put up woith it. To me, cable is like a dream - never imagined performance like I'm getting now.Bing

Feb-14-02, 09:01 PM (EST) 16. "RE: Train-Sim transfer speed" Don't know much about the cable speeds. Here in Australia we have only cable in two or three cities. The Telcos have opted for DSL here, but at $96 connection, $39.95 a month (zero free megs) 15.9 c a meg up to 500 megs and 5 cents there after! Or a massive $2000 monthly fee for unlimited downloads!!!!!!
We virtually do not have broad band!
BUT......there are several things you can do to improve 56K modems
The first is DO NOT buy a cheap modem, and especially not an internal one!
I have a 5 year old 56 k V90 US Robotics Flash Modem that just delivered me po&nver5.zip (3522kb in 15 mins) at a steady 5.2 k a second!
and whats more I very rarely need to do it twice. It hardly ever produces a corupted file. Some modems actually use the computer to do some of the work, they are usually the cheapest ones. 3Com recently sold US Robotics (again) But their modems cost 3 times the price of the popular ones, and mine connects at 5200, the cheapies about 4700max, and mostly 4200 My robotics never disconnects, Several cheapies drop out as much as 4 times an hour.
I build second hand computers for impoverished students at our local University, so I get to test this stuff on my phone line and can tell you these comparisons are spot on!
Cheers

Feb-14-02, 10:09 PM (EST) 17. "RE: Train-Sim transfer speed" I too had a problem with the speed. I am on a cable modem and the times were slowing down. I went to speedguide.net and got the tweak for the computer. Much faster especially with Download accerator. I am getting about 400 to 500 for a download. I hope this helps. The one I used was a short program that changed some settings. They have since updated it to run where you can save previous settings. Of course there are no gaurantees but it has helped me. Even with downloading games that were 150 meg
Hope this helps
Terry
