Feb-05-02, 07:38 AM (EST) "Whoa! BRAINSTORM!!!! Route builders and reskinners, read this NOW!!!!!!!" I just had an idea hit me like the proverbial ton of bricks. Surprised no one has thought of it before. Maybe someone has, and I just never caught it. Maybe no one will like it, but I gotta shoot it past y'all anyways. I think I just came up with an idea that could be the mother of all fictional routes!Surely I can not be the only one in these forums who has read Atlas Shrugged? Why not attempt to model a portion of the Taggart Transcontinental, as it appears in your mind? I could see the creative genius of guys like Jim and Rich all over this one! Of course it would HAVE to serve Rearden Coal, Rearden Ore, and Rearden Metal, and you'd need a nice Taggart Comet activity or two. Oh yeah, can't forget the John Galt branch either. And reskinners, the sky's the limit here! Ayn Rand wrote this in the mid-'50s during the transition-era, and I know the motive power for the TTRR included "four-unit diesel locomitives" and "old coal-burners". This is YOUR chance to make the paint schemes for Dagnys railroad as you see them in YOUR mind! We'd need freight F-units, E and/or F-units heading up the Comet, mikes and pacifics on wayfreights and locals, etc etc etc. The possibilites are endless! Of course it would be up to the users of the sim to make sure the route does not suffer the same fate that it does in the book. So whaddya guys think, have I hit on something here, or am I straight-jacket fodder? LOLLOLLOL DonPS-DISCLAIMER: Lest you think I am some highly intellectual type for having read this long ago, I am in reality anything but! In fact a lot of that philisohpical-type crap in the book went WAYYYYYYYYY over my head! I skipped over several BORING (IMO) paragraphs as well as the entire chapter titled "This is John Galt Speaking". 'Course I was only 17 and not too wise at the time either. I kept skippin' pages thinking "When in the hell are they gonna start talkin' about the trains again?" LOL PSS-For any of you folks who have never read this book before, you really should give it a try! Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-05-02, 12:48 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Whoa! BRAINSTORM!!!! Route builders and reskinners, read this NOW!!!!!!!" I am unfortunately already working on a route project. I can't do it because of my own route I am building. The more routes the merrier though. Go for it. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-05-02, 07:21 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Whoa! BRAINSTORM!!!! Route builders and reskinners, read this NOW!!!!!!!" Randy Pfeiffer, creator of El Dorado Software's 3rd PlanIt, has been building a model railroad based on the "Taggart Transcontinental Railroad". He has a little bit on information about it at his site and a layout download for 3rdPlanIt users:http://www.trackplanning.com/layouts.htmRon

Found that site yesterday whilst using "Atlas Shrugged" and "Taggart Transcontinental" as keywords. Perhaps his track plan could give our resident route builders something to go off of?Don Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
