Feb-01-02, 02:26 AM (EST) "How can I get the brakes to release quickly?" My life is to short to have an engine dictate when it will start moving. Could someone tell me what values in the .eng file to change so that the brakes will release quickly?

Feb-01-02, 07:29 AM (EST) 2. "RE: How can I get the brakes to release quickly?" The wait for the brakes to release in MSTS is way too short compared to the real thing. The wait for the brakes to release in a 50 car train can be measured in minutes in real life. The FRED's or SBUs on freight trains today (They replaced the Caboose) transmit the brake pipe pressure to a receiver in the loco cab so the engineer will know when all the train brakes are released. If he tries to start the train too soon, the usual result is a broken knuckle.

Feb-01-02, 10:13 AM (EST) 4. "RE: How can I get the brakes to release quickly?" Well, simulation is all about a certain level of realism combined with a certain level of advantageous lack of reality! One of the biggest advantages of real industrial simulators, such as airline flight simulators, and I would suspect real railroad cab simulators, is the ability to isolate specific tasks or events and practice them repeatedly without waiting for a bunch of other real time intervening events to take place. Without hacking anything, as far as MSTS is concerned, one easy solution is to use the simple controls; but that, of course, may remove many other elements of realism that you might want to keep. Another solution, which we use often in MSFS is to save a condition, such as the point at which the brakes release completely, and start from there by loading that situation.
