Jan-30-02, 08:04 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Moving Radiator Fans" I know that it's set up with the wheels, Name each one with a wheel number (Wheels33, 13, whatever) then center the axis to the part. You have to set the axis a certain way (I don't know exactly what direction the axis should be though....Kurt Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-31-02, 09:39 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Moving Radiator Fans" Hopefully someone with experience will come along and address this, but I believe it has something to do with setting up bogies within bogies. I'm pretty sure that if you search the locomotive forum you'll find something on this.IIRC, you set up each axle as a "bogie", then group these bogies under the main bogie. I'm sure that I'm not explaining this very well, (no hands-on experience) but hopefully someone will chime in.Take care,Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-31-02, 07:53 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Moving Radiator Fans" The Alco PA/PB locomotive set (and my upcoming Alco RS11) employs a rotating radiator fan. I created this effect in 3D studio max by creating a separate object (the fan blades) and then animating it using eight frames (in each frame, the object is rotated incrementaly). Finally, I linked the animated object to the main mesh. It's based upon on the animation sequences used in Kuju's Flying Scotsman. The .3ds file for it is included in the MSTS samples folder. I'd suggest loading into your 3d software and examining it to see how the animation and linking works. There are a couple of drawbacks to this... the fan's rotational speed is dependent on the speed of locomotive, which is not prototypical. Additionally, the fan can't be "turned off." In the case of most EMD locomotives, which usually have two or three radiator fans, the fans are automatically turned on and off (and fan speed varied) by engine temperature (much like an electric radiator fan in an automobile). Therefore, while it is possible to animate radiator fans in MSTS, it's not possible to accurately model their behavior. It's still a vary interesting effect that adds an extra dimension to the model.

Feb-01-02, 02:30 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Moving Radiator Fans" I guess it would be possible to tie animations to the winshield wipers. That would give you a switchable animation not tied to engine speed. Downside is that you would either have to leave off the wipers, or put up with seeing them run no matter what the weather is like.Ron
