Jun-19-01, 10:16 AM (EST) "A new theory on why MSTS has problems installing/running..." I've been told that disk two has encoding on it that makes it non-copyable. I tested this and found it was true. Now some CD-ROMs espesially DVD-CDROMs have a problem reading the CD with this encoding. SInce the reader doesn't know how to handle it, it either kills the install or it will corrupt the install causing the game to have the problems described in this forum. I've ran into this problem a couple of times before albeit not as severe as this game. My solution...I got a name brand quality plain old CD Reader 32x +/-. I bet most people having problems are using thier DVD ROMS, and/or cheapy CD-ROM drives. What do you all think? Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-19-01, 12:53 PM (EST) 2. "RE: A new theory on why MSTS has problems installing/running..." I think your correct in your theory! A friend bought MSTS and tried several times, and returned for replacement copies of the CDs. He was never able to get the thing to install. I recall hearing the same complaints when FS2000 first came out, the copy-guard was not acceptable to certain CD machines.
In this case I think Microsoft should make non copyguard disks available on an exchange basis to the public.
My copy went in flawlessly and works well!

Should MS not have beta-tested this "feature" to ensure that all of its customers' computers would not be prevented from using the application -- MSTS -- that they just purchased?
Incidentally, I purchased one of the first versions of MSFS2K Pro when it became available, and it's worked fine on my computer, one of several that I tried with no success to install MSTS this weekend. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I don't see why a guy should have to go out and buy/install a new CD player just because his system's CD won't read M$ CD's with copy protection! This should have been discovered in beta testing by M$, or didn't the beta test CDs have the copy protection in place?
Remember when they first started putting "Macrovision" on VHS tapes and some TVs refused to play the movies? Most of the studios would exchange the tapes for non protected tapes to appease the customers. The least M$ should do is offer to accept the protected disks in exchange for non-protected issues.

Crash, you posted this theory of yours elsewhere and I have to tell you it fails the reality test. I tried installing MSTS using each of the readers on my several home computers, and a couple others as well. It simply does not work properly, and the system crashes that resulted afterward were consistent on each of these computers. Wasn't this "feature" beta-tested for its potential -- and now confirmed -- adverse effects on a wide customer base?Let me ask you this: it's been suggested by others on this forum that Simmers shell out a hundred bucks or more for a new video card to see if just maybe MSTS will work. Now you suggest here that a Simmer purchase a "name brand quality plain old" CD reader, whatever that may be. (Does my HP qualify? It, too, did not result in a working copy of MSTS that could display the opening video sequence, didn't reboot the machine as the train controls were engaged, didn't cause repeated crashes of the systems.)Where on the MSTS System Requirements does it say that a Simmer must do ANY of this? Since when does an application require such herculean effort or additional out-of-pocket expenditures to make it function on more than a limited subset of machines? I'm technically quite experienced, perhaps for more years than you have been alive, our computers are all up-to-date, and I'm an avid MSFSimmer, achieving frame rates of 30-40fps consistently on the same computer that MSTS crashes.I've wasted enough time with this extremely poor sim, and it's on its way back for further beta testing by someone who cares not a whit about their time. Jun-19-01, 02:02 PM (EST) 5. "RE: A new theory on why MSTS has problems installing/running..." Well, I would try a multiread CD-ROM. I have a bone stock Dell XPST500 with the standard CD-ROM. I ad no trouble installing it. When I had my DxR2 DVD, I could not read CD-RW's (although that does not apply here). I think a "plain-old" CD-ROM indiactes a CD-ROM not a DVD, CD writer, or DVD/cd writer etc. my 2 cents Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

This thing is nowhere near ready for prime time. It just amazes me how many people 1) assume we're stupid or have lousy computers if MSTS won't run properly for us and 2) are willing to spend countless precious hours and $$ trying to get this defective product to work, as though it was THEIR problem and not Microsoft's.Microsoft had better get their act together before releasing FS2002.Charlie

Jun-19-01, 07:11 PM (EST) 8. "RE: A new theory on why MSTS has problems installing/running..." I don't get it! I bought and installed this sim and have had very little in the way of problems running it, (except the uncoupling bug and the dead end yards in Japan).
My system is not the "high end" systems of today:Athlon T-bird 750, Asus A7V motherboard, latest via 4-in-1 drivers, Creative Annihilator 2 (GeForce 2 Gt something or other with 32 megs ram. 256 meg 133 ram, force feed back MS joystick (not used in this sim) and a quirky diamon sound card for which there appears to be no driver updates. I get 50 FPS on the high end and 20 on the low end at 1024x768 res with all sliders maxed except visibility ( two notches down) and no dynamic shadows.Once in while I get the momentary pauses (like when a tree or other scenery item is close) but not bad at all.How one person can try this sim on 5 different machines and not get it to work after three exchanges of CDs is a mystery. Did you buy the sim at a reputable reseller? I ask this as I know a local shop here (who is reputable) got a shipment of an MS program that was pirated. In this case, the copy protect on the originals prevented the proper install of the pirated software.Even if the reseller is legit, sometimes the supplier does not check to ensure the authenticity of the item. That's the only thing I can think of that would cause this kind of problem on 5 different machines and three different copies. Unless, there is something all five machines have in common, like an anti-virus program or somethng else running in the background on all of them. Jun-19-01, 07:30 PM (EST) 9. "RE: A new theory on why MSTS has problems installing/running..." I spend six hours trying to load this stupid program and I still couldn't play Train Sim on my Macintosh... I have successfully installed this program and run it using DVD drives from Toshiba and Hi-Val, and on two burners (Teac and Sony) and on three readers (Yamaha, Plextor and Mitsumi) and have had no problems at all.
