Jan-27-02, 08:29 PM (EST) "About to give up on the Whitefish route - Suggestions anyone ???" Well, I've just about reached my wit's end. I have installed the Whitefish route three times now, but I cannot get it to run. When I install the route, there is no "terrain.ace" file inside the Terr Tex folder. There IS a "mntn_low.ace" file, which I re-name to "terrain.ace". MSTS loads up OK, but when I attempt to run the Whitefish route the sim crashes with a "Train world initialization failed" error that leaves me back at my desktop, set at 800x600 resolution (I usually run MSTS at 1280x1024x16).What I have after installing the route is a folder like this:C:\Programs\Games\MS Train Simulator\ROUTES\WhitefishThe Whitefish folder occupies 398 MB and consists of 3,815 files, in 22 folders. Can someone who has the route up-and-running please compare the properties of their Whitefish folder with mine and see if there are any glaring discrepancies between yours and mine? When I run an analysis using the Route Control Lite program, I'm told that I'm missing a consist ("Bob Quehl.con") but that's the only evident sign of trouble. I'm unsure whether or not lacking that particular consist is sufficient to crash the program.I'd love to be able to explore this route; the reviews from those who are running it successfully are positively glowing. If anyone can offer help/advice/suggestions I'd be grateful.CS

Abit BE6-II motherboard
Pentium III 800 MHz CPU
256 MB RAM
Hercules 3D Prophet II MX (GeForce 2) video
Diamond MX 300 sound
12 GB free on my HD
I typically run MSTS at 1280x1024x16, with all graphics options at max value2) I do not have the full version of Route Control. I have seen others make references to achieving success with the Whitefish route after loading it out of Route Control. I only have the "lite" version of Route Control, so I don't think this is an option for me.3) I have contacted the author of the route. He seems like a real nice guy, but says he is unable to offer me any help or advice on how to get the route up-and-running. I sent him images of what my route folder and he seemed confident that it appears healthy. If anyone else can help, that would be swell. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

What I did is d/l a program called stuffit.bat from the file library (it's a batch file program) had no trouble running the install just follow chucks readme and the stuffit.bat readme and you should be up and running in no time. good luck

Jan-28-02, 00:32 AM (EST) 3. "RE: About to give up on the Whitefish route - Suggestions anyone ???" You sound like you spent your day like I did , not fun. I also loaded 3 times but at last I got it. I think you are almost there. Now go into route control, pack route, whitefish. this may take a while.then add route , select whitefish, will take a while while transfering data, then load whitefish. it should work. if not, mine did not at this point. i ran clean from route control and tried again and reloaded it with route control. IT WORKS Drove it from troy to sandpoint with no problems.you can just try to run clean from route control before trying above.good luck Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-28-02, 01:50 AM (EST) 4. "RE: About to give up on the Whitefish route - Suggestions anyone ???" If you search the threads you will find about three fixes to load it up. Don't give up. Start by getting stuffit.bat out of the file library. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-28-02, 09:11 AM (EST) 5. "RE: About to give up on the Whitefish route - Suggestions anyone ???" Success!!!I searched through all of the utilities in the File Library, but was unable to find "stuffit.bat". I did find "combstuf.zip" (posted 10-16-2001 by Chris Talpas and Jim Ward). This archive includes "Ezstuff3.bat" and "Combined.ref"; the authors claim it will fix most routes with failed installations. It fixed mine. Of course, now my Whitefish route occupies 723 MB (7,409 files in 22 folders - 182% larger than it was after following the Whitefish Route installation instructions). So I assume it contains many files that are not necessary to execute the route design. I'm not complaining. Just glad I have the opportunity to explore the route. Thanks to everyone here who offered helpful suggestions.CS Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-28-02, 12:05 PM (EST) 6. "RE: About to give up on the Whitefish route - Suggestions anyone ???" I am having similar troubles. I can't find the "terrain.ace" file either and can not get Whitefish to run despite careful (I do try) following of the instructions.I have done several downloads of the route, which takes a *long* time with my crummy ISP...I don't have (or understand) stuffit or any route control. Is this necessary to get Whitefish to run? Appreciate any help as this route sounds good!Regards,James Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-28-02, 12:18 PM (EST) 7. "RE: About to give up on the Whitefish route - Suggestions anyone ???" Why did you download it 3 times? Were the files imcomplete? When I do a large download I make a copy before I unzip it so I don't have to keep downloading it. There is no terrain.ace to delete, just rename the other file. The is another thread that answers alot of these problems. The download also had approx. 30 megs of backup files and buffers that I deleted before loading and had no problems. If you have a cd-rw, a good idea is to format a RW-CD and after you install a new engine, route, etc; is to move the file to a RW-CD so that in the future if there is a problem all you have to do is put the cd in to recover the needed files. Jan-28-02, 12:55 PM (EST) 8. "RE: About to give up on the Whitefish route - Suggestions anyone ???" Not exactly sure why I tried to download it three times , I guess it's becuse I couldn't find the terrain.ace file..I tried the suggestion to download Combstuf.zip and managed to run it in my Whitefish directory. It copied all the files and I then located and deleted the terrain.ace file and changed the mountain_low file to terrain.ace.I was pleased to see that Whitefish then showed up in my MSTS routes directory, but alas MSTS crashes just at the point where it is finishing loading Whitefish. Sigh. You mention another thread on this topic. I will have to search that out. Do you recall the name ? Thanks for any and all assists!James Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Hey James,OK, this may sound crazy, but here's how it ended up working for me. I ran the programs out of the combstuf.zip archive to copy all of the files (some necessary and some not) to the Whitefish directory. Then I deleted terrain.ace and renamed mntn_lo.ace (can't recall if that's the exact name - I'm on my lunch break at work and MSTS is on my home PC) to terrain.ace. The Whitefish route appeared in the pull-down route menu inside MSTS, but the first time I attempted to run it, it crashed and told me it had trouble finding mntn_lo.ace. So, I went back, found the mntn_lo.ace file in one of the other route's Terr Tex folders, and copied it to the Whitefish Terr Tex folder. Since then, Whitefish runs fine. Takes up a lot of space on my hard drive, but it runs. Give that a try and see what happens. If it still doesn't go, email me and I'll try to help troubleshoot (after I get home).CS Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-28-02, 09:56 PM (EST) 12. "RE: About to give up on the Whitefish route - Suggestions anyone ???" As I am a huge fan of MSTS, and realize that new routes keep this sim going. Is it possible to design routes that have the ease of loading, such as Jim ward's and Rich Garber's ? I will be the first to admit, the new routes are fantastic, but lacking in the latest computer technology, I for one feel lost to some of the instructions needed to get some of these routes up and running. May I suggest a standard of compiling the files of these routes, so they might work for more than a hand full of users?Just some thoughts, and please keep up the great work

Jan-29-02, 12:40 PM (EST) 13. "RE: About to give up on the Whitefish route - Suggestions anyone ???" No luck. I've tried about all that I can come up with and the route still crashes MSTS......I'll have to wait for the sequel
