Jan-25-02, 05:21 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Its confession time!" i used simple controls for the first 2weeks i had the game back in july 2001 but it got boring. and it actually seems harder to control the train on simple controls due to the way it combines the brake and throttle.

Jan-25-02, 05:21 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Its confession time!" Actually, I've never even tried the simple controls. To me they defeat the point of having a simulator. If anything, I'd want it more realistic, not less.

Jan-25-02, 05:31 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Its confession time!" I've never touched the Simple Controls, don't really plan on to. I like controling the trains without, it gives a alot of respect to what the real guys have to deal with. On that note, since I'm confessing, I no longer use the track monitor on Marias Pass, and the NEC, I know tme in the back of my head (except the milepost) And, I haven't touched F5 in a month After I get a chance to dink around the Whitefish Route...I'm going to try it without the Track Monitor to see how good I am.Brian E. Jan-25-02, 06:42 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Its confession time!" Driving a heavy steam train up a hill using all the controls is what driving is all about....otherwise you might aswell watch a railroad video....but if you enjoy then what can I say.??

Jan-25-02, 07:55 PM (EST) 13. "RE: Its confession time!" Yes no sometimes always never. I use the automatic fireman for driving steam, but didn't use the simple controls. I had my youngest son's MSTS set up with simple controls at first, but when Gordon first became available I discovered that you couldn't drive steam engines with the simple controls for some reason. I use a Saitek X-36 joystick with a throttle (generates keystrokes with joystick movement), and there's a hell of a delay when using keypresses instead of a mouse. And with simple controls turned on, the keypresses won't forward/reverse with steam. Mike never used a joystick, he always preferred the keyboard (he even flies airplanes and helicopters with the keyboard, strange kid), but after I turned the simple controls off and showed him how to drive with realistic controls, he started using the mouse, which has a much faster response than the keyboard controls. After discovering that, I still use the joystick for diesels, but when I drive steam I do it the way he does - switch back to interior view and slap the levers over with the mouse.
Funny this should come up today, just this morning he asked me what a "fusable link" was, since he had burnt out one on Thomas. It appears he is experimenting with turning off automatic fireman, so he's way ahead of me! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-25-02, 08:11 PM (EST) 14. "RE: Its confession time!" Hey David, don't feel alone out there buddy, I use the simple controls must of the time ... now. The only reason is my grandson (which is 2) likes to sit on my lap while Im playing. And by using the simple controls its easier to drive the train and hold on to him at the same time. Jan-26-02, 02:54 AM (EST) 16. "RE: Its confession time!" Ive never even tried simple controls either, although i do use the automatic fireman, its almost imposible to drive the train and do the firemans job at the same time, after all, in reality there would be a fireman and an engineer in the cab, not just one man. So i think its "all right" to drive like this, but some day i hope to master the fireman too, I think it will give better controll over the train.Trevor Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-26-02, 07:30 AM (EST) 17. "RE: Its confession time!" LAST EDITED ON Jan-26-02 AT 07:33 AM (EST)I too, like most here, have had MSTS since June. I never used the simple controls once. I'm a gamer so I'm used to the "trial and error" method of doing things. I never read an instruction manual either. Except for Max Payne to find out what keys do what. I do use the auto fireman alot though. When I'm running 5 or 6 steamers and 150+ cars up Marias v3 I can't let my guard down by filling the boiler and shoveling coal. I need to keep an eye on Steam usage, generation, and speed. I did try the simple controls once. It felt harder to control the train and didn't work well with steamers. But to each his own. Everyone has there own driving style. Also without simple controls and suto fireman it is easier to get steamers up to their full speed. I got the ESE up to 165 on the NEC with auto fireman off and of course no simple controls. MSTS has limitations when using driving aids like autofireman and simple controls that won't allow the engine to get to full speed so in time you will use the "hands on" technique and the game will become more "as real as it gets". Jan-26-02, 06:28 PM (EST) 19. "RE: Its confession time!" The only "simplification" I use is the auto fireman on steamers. I agree that it is a fact that one person can hardly do the job of what were two persons in reality. Yeah, there were a few steamers designed for one-man control (German class 98 box cab steamer, also known as "Glass House"...semi-automatic firing that was simple enough to use that the engineer could do the job), but the big ones certainly aren't. In my combat flight sims (IL-2 being the most recent) I also use those designator labels on enemy aircraft, simply because no PC screen can truly simulate the impressions a real pilot experiences in the cockpit (e.g. seeing objects in the corner of his eyes), leave the fact that the resolution on screens is a whole lot lower than that of the human eye.
Other than that I'm using "Complex Controls" in TS and am proud of it! D.M.
