Jan-22-02, 06:02 AM (EST) "What add-ons should a new MSTS user get?" Hi all,Just wondering which add-ons you think someone just starting with MSTS should download, to make things easier or less 'buggy'. I'm firstly looking at utilities, and secondly looking at locos and rolling stock. So, if you could tell me which add-ons you've found useful, I'd appreciate it. Thanks,Matt Austin Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

>Matt Austin All of them; or at least, as much as you have room for. Hi-capacity hard drives are sort of dirt cheap nowdays. I just last weekend put in another 60gig hard drive. I now have 20gigs for Train Sim. I would get ---Route Control
ConBuilder
Sky Conductor
Fix from How In the World for the selections page
Tutorials for
Route building
Activity buildingRoutes
Port Ogden & Northern v4
East Metro RR
Marias Pass 3.0
Hoboken Shore
IF you like/want Euro routes then East Coast MainlineI'm sure that there are other items people have that are of much use, but I can't remember them at the moment. I'm not home where my computer is so I can't check. Note that I haven't said ANYTHING about loco's, cars, or scenery enhancements. Some/all of those add on routes WILL require d/l'ing some of those.NOTE: Not all of these items are available on Train-Sim. Some have their own site and some of them are try/buy items. You can bet that if there's an item on these lists you SHOULD buy them. (er, if you can scrape up the $; is what I mean) Hope this helps; anyone else got more?

Jan-22-02, 12:43 PM (EST) 2. "RE: What add-ons should a new MSTS user get?" For North american locomotives and rolling stock, I recommend:1. 3DTrains F7 (demo or commercial set). I've lost track of the number of skins available for this classic locomotive. http://www.3dtrains.com2. Train Artisan's Empire State Express. Set the standard for MSTS steam locomotives and passenger cars. Many other downloads use the ESE's sound, cab or cars and require prior installation of the ESE.Ron Paludan

Jan-23-02, 02:38 PM (EST) 4. "RE: What add-ons should a new MSTS user get?" LAST EDITED ON Jan-23-02 AT 02:42 PM (EST)I just visited your site and took a look around. Please don't be offended, but I have to make a suggestion. Please consider changing the color schemes of your pages. White or yellow text on a black or very dark background is fine, as it dark text on a light background. But, red or even yellow text on a green background is very bad. You want as much contrast as possible. On your USA Routes page you have red text on a black background, and a link in yellow. See much easier it is to read the yellow link than it is to read the red paragraphs above it? I noticed myself reading this text much more slowly than usual, and there is no reason for this. You should make the text easy for visitors to read. There's no point in posting information if you're going to make it hard to read, right? The other day I stopped at trainartisan.com and when I went to the forum I noticed they use blue text on a black background. Here in my sunny computer room I had to squint to make out the threat titles. Why? Don't they want me to read the titles? White or yellow on black is so much easier to read. I just don't understand why Web authors use these hard to read color combinations. I wrote to the webmaster but I never heard back... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-23-02, 05:58 PM (EST) 6. "RE: What add-ons should a new MSTS user get?" Well, sir, I've been there also and have much the same comments. I DO wish that people would realize that what seem very clear to one person is almost unreadable for others. I have in mind a board which I used to go to. Pages were in RED with almost unreadable yellow text. If one checks any standard art text on color combos one finds that this is possibly the worst possible combo. The TrainArtisan site is another example. I can't imagine that ANYONE can read mid-blue on a black background without a LOT of squinting. I freely admit my eyes aren't what they were even 10 years ago but I can still see; most of the time. I don't wish this to seem like a diatribe against ANY particular person or site. Just observations I've also made. And I must admit that unless I REALLY have to go to sites like this, why, I DON'T!

Jan-23-02, 06:36 PM (EST) 7. "RE: What add-ons should a new MSTS user get?" Just an observation: 1 in 10 males are colour blind to some degree, mostly in the red green range.Basically what you don't see you don't miss, unless it comes to reading stuff on sites!Black on white is the best, though obviously boring. Altenatively, any primary colour (Red, Blue, Green) should contrast with is secondary opposite (Cyan, Yellow, Magenta).I.E. Red with Cyan etc, Blue with Yellow etc.David Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-24-02, 07:29 AM (EST) 12. "RE: What add-ons should a new MSTS user get?" It is a bit "bright." Since you like green and yellow (good choices), try the following for HTML colors:Green (Background): #004000
Yellow (Fonts): #FFFFBE
Red (Stripes/Separators): #800000You can also try using 1/4 the amount of green displayed, with 3/4 of the above yellow as background. For text in the yellow area, use black. Cheers!
