Jan-22-02, 02:20 AM (EST) "Traumatized" I was eating a sandwich driving east on my newly downloaded Marias Pass v3 when, on looking up, I realized a car was stuck on a crossing. Despite emergency braking I T boned it. Damm near had a heart attack till I remembered that there are no virtual people in MSTS.
Was this for real e.g a wake up call or a 'bug' Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-22-02, 08:18 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Traumatized" Really, I think it's probably a bug. The only time I've seen cars IN crossings is when there are multiple tracks, and consequently the crossing gates might be several car lengths apart. A car passes one gate, just as they are going down, and doesn't make it all the way across before the other gate is down. The cars stop when it hits a "down" gate, so they'll just sit there. When you place a crossing object in the Route Editor, there is a parameter you can set for "Crash Probability," though. I haven't yet figured out what it does, if anything.

Jan-22-02, 09:05 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Traumatized" If you set crash probability at any value other than 0 you must blow your horn when approachiing the crossing otherwise the activity will end. I set one on my route to 10% and forgot to sound the horn and a message popped up saying you forgot to sound a warning or something like that. I am not sure if it works in explore mode. I have never set one higher than 30% so I don't know what happeens beyond that.

It wouldn't be hard to model crashes, the cars just would have to have an eng-file of some sort specifying weight among other parameters, to correctly calculate how the car thrown during a crash. Just like the wagons of the train do when derailing.Maybe in the next version... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-22-02, 08:21 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Traumatized" i did something similar once, when i was driving a freight across marias and suddenly out of nowhere a large freight truck crossed the tracks about 6 inches from my loco. this is just a sim but still i felt some kind of panicing fear when it happened, it really freaked me out. made me think about what real life engineers have to deal with if they ever get into that situation.-Justin Cornell

Jan-22-02, 11:47 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Traumatized" Hey Rocky, My video card is not quite fast enough to handle my MSTS. so I have my display setting back just enought to acheive 10 to 12 fps. So I dont see any crossing traffic at all. But on the other hand I do see hikers that stand in the middle of the tracks, and believe me they dont move. You know I wouldnt have thought that microsoft whould have factored crossing mishaps in my little nerf world. HA HADavid Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
