Jun-18-01, 01:35 PM (EST) "I'm Getting 60 Frames, Wow!!! How?" Yep, this game rocks in my system (P3 800, 256 megs, Geforce 2 MX 32 megs, 7200 rpm HD). And it runs at 60 fps...well most of the time. It can go down to 26 fps but that's the lowest I got.Would you believe it I recently replaced my video card with a 64 meg Geforce 3 and didn't run as weel as with my MX (Which is kinda weird). Downloaded the latest video drivers and it only made it worse...textures we're really weird looking, just like playing at 640 x 480 instead of 1024 x 768. I reverted back to my old MX and my old drivers (v6.56) and now it runs like butter. It chugs a little bit on some parts but I think it has something to do with bugs in the game itself which I'm sure will be rectified. And here's the secret to acheiving actual 60fps (although your framerate might show 60fps but doesn't really run as smooth as real 60 fps)...change your monitor refresh rate (if it's capable...don't hold me responsible if yours break after this) to 60khz. I gotta tell you, the smoothness of the framerate is unbelievable at this rate...try it on Quake 3 and post your reactions. =) Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-18-01, 04:36 PM (EST) 1. "RE: I'm Getting 60 Frames, Wow!!! How?" Good to hear this. I have a problem with my video card being unable to accommodate the snow function. Will not load...get the error message and a crash. What type of video card are you using and how many megs do you suggest. I also sometimes get throbbing or pulsing audio sounds when loading ... after reloading several times it corrects the problem. Is this just the nature of the beast. I have 128 MB of Ram......do I need more? Appreciate any help.

Jun-18-01, 06:22 PM (EST) 3. "RE: I'm Getting 60 Frames, Wow!!! How?" LAST EDITED ON Jun-18-01 AT 06:35 PM (EST)Jkcooney, I think 128 is OK but I have not tried running the game with less than 256 megs. As I mentioned, I have a Geforce 2 MX with 32megs (video memory) and I have 256 megs of RAM. I already tried upgrading to a GeForce 3 with 64megs but so far, the latest drivers are buggy the game didn't run any better to justify the price of the card ($599). If yur on a budget and still want great framerates (you can't go wrong with 60 will ya?), then I suggest you get a GeForce MX. Keep in mind though, some mother boards aren't compatible with the GeForce 2's...check Nvidia's website. If yur having sound problems, I suggest updating yur souncard. I have a Sound Blaster Live! Value and it works fine. I hope this helps. Oh, and by the way, the video drivers I'm using aren't version 6.56 as I mentioned on my original post, but 6.50. Sorry bout that. Jun-19-01, 09:15 AM (EST) 7. "RE: I'm Getting 60 Frames, Wow!!! How?" Hey all. I changed my refresh rate to 70 and the color to 16 on desktop and MSTS and I got considerable increase in framerate! Mind you, not all sliders are up...(view,terrain), but everything else...(shadows are checked and all quality sliders are maxed) and I'm getting close to 60 in cab and around 20-50 outside view no matter where I run. Jun-19-01, 11:05 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Warning....." Lowering your refresh rate will not damage your monitor. Just click past the warning and let windows make the adjustment. If you don't like it or want to revert back to the original refresh rate, windows will do that for you after 15 seconds if you take no further action.Jim Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-19-01, 11:23 AM (EST) 12. "RE: Warning....." In Windows98 or WinME, right click the desktop, click properties, then settings, then advanced, then adapter. Under refresh rate it should say adapter default, optimum and several other choices depending on what monitor you have and the software you installed to support that monitor. Pick a refresh rate such as 75Hz then hit apply at the bottom of the box. Click past the warnings as windows will attempt to change the refresh rate on the fly. If you don't like what you see next, wait 15 seconds and windows will automatically revert back to the way it was.HTH

Jun-19-01, 01:01 PM (EST) 13. "RE: Refresh Rate..." I'm glad you guys are considering my suggestion. Remember to be careful not to overload your monitor and always check your specs before changing your refresh rate. I suggest 60khz if your monitor can handle it. 70 is still good but I find it still has slight jerkiness and it doesn't run as smooth. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-20-01, 01:07 PM (EST) 16. "RE: Warning....." Thanks Jim...I will try this. My Video card is probably grossly underpowered. It is an Intel 82810 Graphics Controller. I believe the version is 4.12 with the driver dated 6/8/2000. Will it be much help to update this with the latest driver from Intel or would I be better off just buying a new video board?

Jun-19-01, 01:02 PM (EST) 14. "RE: I'm Getting 60 Frames, Wow!!! How?" Do you have Quake 3 Arena? If you do, I suggest running it in this refressh rate (60-70) and watch it run like butter, even with GeForce 2 MX!!! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-19-01, 08:03 PM (EST) 15. "RE: I'm Getting 60 Frames, Wow!!! How?" For what it's worth...I have two Athlon machines. The only significant difference between the two is the processors. One is 750 K7 Slot A, and the other is 1200 266Bus Socket A. There is a 15-17 fps rate difference between the two, and they run nearly identical bus and peripheral setups, including indentical graphics cards. The graphics card has proven to be not nearly as important as the horsepower on the bus.As for RAM? I have tested this sim in increments of 128MB. Peak performance seems to be reached at 384MB. Anything higher is electron fluff, but since memory is so cheap right now, why not?I run one of the older Xeon-II processors at work. It has 2MB of internal full-speed cache and more RAM than I can count. My Train Sim experience on that machine is unholy. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-20-01, 01:10 PM (EST) 17. "RE: I'm Getting 60 Frames, Wow!!! How?" Compared with your setup my config. seems antiquated. I currently have an Intel 82810 Graphics controller and the driver for this is apparently version 4.12 dated 6/8/2000. Intel does provide updates to this driver. I wonder if it would help or should I simply invest in a new Video board?

Jun-22-01, 10:00 PM (EST) 22. "RE: I'm Getting 60 Frames, Wow!!! How?" I recommend copling a solid plate of copper to a pair of continuous-duty liquid helium pumps. Then, calibrate the negative-ion distributor on the flapperstat modulator apparatus and adjust for your own altitude above sea level. I just ran a train with 8 locos and 100 cars on Marias Pass. After decoupling at Cutbank, like they always do, I noticed that my frame rates had dropped. It seems the longer the train, the more AI horsepower needed. You all may know this, so pardon my babbling, but I ain't the sharpest spoon in the drawer. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
