Jan-08-02, 08:15 PM (EST) "Snowy tracks beta textures..." Ok..
I modded the textures:
ACleantrack1.ace
Acleantrack2.ace
Acleantrackbase.ace
in the ROUTES/USA2/TEXTURES/SNOW folder. and got these results.. Pretty close to a not too heavily travelled line. I'll also run up a set that are almost completely covered for those "open up the main after a storm" runs. Let me know how much snow you want <G>...Message Areas - "Snowy tracks beta textures..." – image 1
Message Areas - "Snowy tracks beta textures..." – image 2

This texture set can be downloaded at:http://cpr.railfan.net/CPMSTS/beta/snowtrack.zipThere is no setup or install, just a zip of 3 files. If you want to play with this, and screw up MSTS, remember its beta, you were warned.. no readme, nothing..BACKUP THE ORIGINALS BEFORE playing in the snow..In addition, I took the heavy snow fix, and instead of using the one US2TarGnd ace file, I modded it and a few others to vary the effect.. Those files are on the Miscellaneous downloads page..Same caveat, no setup file, or readmes.. I'll get around to it eventually, maybe..
I apologize for the lack of setup proggies, and the rather blunt warnings, but its simply a matter of not having time to run up and test stuff..I'm looking at the steam and smoke textures to see what can be done with those, and someone wanted a transparent spacer car, so, its back to Castle FrankenMSTS for some more experiments..
Comments and suggestions welcome..
cheers

Jan-08-02, 10:36 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Snowy tracks beta textures..." Hal,
I know what you're up to........first you redo all the snow, get it downloaded all across the States, then you're going to release all those rusty junkers you've been working on so all our trains break down and fall apart, clogging our mainlines. We all have to apply for Federal Aid, the US goes broke, Canada's dollar surges, and you become Prime Minister. AHA, caught you!!

Jan-08-02, 10:44 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Snowy tracks beta textures..." Be sure to read the entire post before thinking of a response, my point is different than the first couple of sentences imply."If you want to play with this, and screw up MSTS, remember its beta, you were warned."Is the word "beta" supposed to disavow you of all responsibility? I have read that time and again from developers. "This is beta, so don't come after me if something happens!!!"I don't care if something is beta or not, if I install it, and run it, and it screws up my computer ME, MYSELF, and I am responsible! Not you!Lawrence Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-09-02, 09:54 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Snowy tracks beta textures..." Hi Lawrence..
I appreciate your sentiments, and in all honesty, you are
the kind of guy a developer loves. You have no idea how frustrating it is to code up something and release it, and have
a bunch of folks blame you for just about everything that goes wrong with their system after they installed your stuff..
..I've been in the IT industry for 29 years.. I've seen a lot of this kind of stuff..
I had one fellow way back who dl'ed one of my locos and sent me a rather long email detailing the errors in my methods of zipping, duplicate file names in unzipping, missing files, etc..basically implying I didn't knowhow to use PKZIP.. the problem? He was using the DOS version of pkzip to unzip my locos
and cars.. Truncated file names.. Claimed I "broke" TrainSim..
Believe me, it took a lot of customer eduation/service skills
to get this one resolved without making him feel like a fool.. It wasn't his fault, he just didn't know about long file names, and mine was probably the fisrt MSTS add-in he'd ever done.
I'm not trying to say that everyone's like that. A lot of folks
out there have a lot of computer skills, and are comfortable
doing oddball stuff with beta code.. A lot of folks are less experienced. Thats why the warning. If your not 100% sure of what yoru doing, realize there is a risk. I'm not trying to absolve myself of blame, I'll work with anyone who needs help to get something going.. That's why I have one email addy specfically for MSTS stuff.. I get custom skin requests, which I'll always try to accomodate, and a lot of "please help" stuff.
So Lawrence, from all of us developers, thanks.. That makes my day a bit brighter.. And no, I didn't take offense.. Hope you enjoy the textures..cheers

Jan-09-02, 01:23 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Snowy tracks beta textures..." Hey MiskisI don't have that problem. FYI I followed the path...Train Simulator\Routes\USA2\Textures\Snow....Made a new folder called Original Snow Track Textures. Opened the Snow folder, cut and pasted the original texture files into the new Original Snow Track Textures folder, And copied Harolds new track textures into the Snow folder.Hope this helpsChuck Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-09-02, 01:35 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Snowy tracks beta textures..." Thanks for the help Chuck. All is well now. I had also installed some other winter snow files that Harold had on his site, and I guess this was a case of overkill (or winterkill). The inititial three files are all that seems to be needed. Jan-10-02, 00:58 AM (EST) 16. "RE: Snowy tracks beta textures..." OK, I must ask, as I guess I am an idiot, and b4 i screw up...HELP!!!!I copied the originals in the main texture files, and then placed the new "deep" snow files in. I still have the same track texture. DO I need to copy them into each routes texture/snow folder as well? I updated the snow files to the heavy snow a bit ago, and all works well. Sorry to be such a pain, but I thought a question asked is better than a screw up later!!! Kelley

Jan-10-02, 02:40 AM (EST) 17. "RE: Snowy tracks beta textures..." Hi Guys, I thought I posted a while ago, but it didn't take. I must eb completely computer illiterate. I copied the originals for back up, in both the Main textures, and the USA routes 1 and 2. I then put in the version 2 snow. I am already using the "heavy" snow land files. Well now the track shows up clean, with no snow. I went back to the original.I know there isn't a instruction list, but could you please tell me what I did wrong? Do I need more than the 3 zip files? Any help appreciated!!Thanks!!!
Kelley

Jan-10-02, 12:25 PM (EST) 23. "RE: Snowy tracks beta textures..." Hiya..
well.. From what I can remember, you'll need the following:
Basic Lights:
Class/marker lights .
Yellow to the front and sides; larger red to the rear.Inspection (ditch) lights
White spotlights, on the rear, shining onto track/trackside. Only used for track inspection, reverse movements, or inspecting equipment adjacent to tracks. Step lights
Small, white, safety req.In addition, quite often there was a small overhead light on the "porch" over the door, and most (not all, we never finished the upgrade) had truck lights..That help?cheers
Harold
