Jan-08-02, 06:16 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Free download : lorry on wagon" Those are interesting wagons (cars). Thanks for the information! In what kind of service are these wagons used? Are they some sort of shuttle service like the one that runs through the "Chunnel" between England and France? Or are they similar to the "piggyback" TOFC service that we have in North America? Thanks again!Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-08-02, 06:31 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Free download : lorry on wagon" Somebody needs to make a "Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry" Looks nice. We do need more intermodal facilities to model as that's the only real money making freight service in the US besides UPS/Postal contracts.-Andy

Jan-09-02, 06:35 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Free download : lorry on wagon" LAST EDITED ON Jan-09-02 AT 06:38 AM (EST)These are used for normal piggyback trips in Europe. By the way you need all the cars on that site. The picture shown by Roland is of the front car.For use on the Channeltunnel they have very different cars.
Sorry i could not find a better pictures.André Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-09-02, 11:47 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Free download : lorry on wagon" I seem to remember that in Germany (and probably Austria and Switzerland as well) this "TOFC" service is (or was) called the "Rollende Landstrasse"...translating roughly into "Rolling Interstate" or "Rolling Highway". These trains would often include one or two sleeper cars to give the truckers some rest. The first and the last flatcar would have a buffer beam on their outer ends (they can be removed) to connect to the locomotive and sleeper cars, while those in the middle would be connected via an alternate coupler under the wagon floor.
At least I think that's what the idea was...read about it when it was first introduced under this name in the late 80s or early 90s...

There are shuttle services to get the trucks over the Alps. The truckers come from all parts of Europe, drive to the special stations, put their trucks on the train, they self go into a passenger car and on the other site of the Alps, they drive their own way.
This way is called "Rollende Landstrasse" German which can be translated as rolling Highway.
The most famous is between Austria and Italy over the Brenner Pass route, but there are some more routes.Dick van den Hoven

Jan-09-02, 03:26 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Free download : lorry on wagon" Guys, thanks for the information.IIRC, there's an operation in Alaska which is similar to this. However, I believe it is run through the mountains to a town at the end of a branch line. The town in question is not connected to the rest of the state's highway system so rail is the only way in or out for vehicles. (Other than by sea)Now I just need to find an "Alps" route and someone knowlegable enough about the operations to write some activities for it. Take care!Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-09-02, 06:03 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Free download : lorry on wagon" An Alpine route comes with MSTS - the Orient Express runs over it. These are Austrian Alps rather than Swiss Alps, but the same applies. One of the newest Alpine shuttle services is actually on the RhB metre gauge railway in Switzerland through a specially enlarged tunnel.
